Being a worship leader, or clergy member, can be tough. Standing in front of a congregation two or three times a week forces the pastor to become a stationary target for criticism, neglect, and abuse. Pastors are on call twenty-four hours a day and often encounter demanding, disagreeable people who make their lives harder. 

If you belong to a church or worship center of any faith, and want to demonstrate appreciation for your pastor, priest, or leader, here are some things you can do:

1. Offer praise. Tell others in passing or the pastor himself following a service how much it meant to you. Mention specific points that left an impression or made you think. Letting your pastor know that you were listening and able to apply key ideas helps to affirm that his work is meaningful and having a positive effect. Let others know that you appreciate the pastor's perspective and believe he is doing a great job. Your comments may help others to start thinking and likewise compliment the pastor.

2. Offer thanks. It never hurts to say "Thanks for a great sermon" at the end of Sunday service. Or when your pastor makes a hospital visit or house call, thank him for stopping by, especially when there are so many people to see and tasks to complete. While some folks may expect a personal visit from the pastor as part of his regular duties, this expectation may not be realistic if he has a busy schedule with a family of his own. The gift of gratitude means much to hard-working clergy.

3. Offer encouragement. Pastors are only human. It is natural that they will sometimes grow discouraged or depressed, become ill, or lose heart. Whether you know this for a fact or sense it as a possibility, give your pastor a little extra support by sending an email or a note:

"We're praying for you."

"Hope you get over that cold soon."

"Your leadership is making a positive difference."

Most pastors receive occasional criticism, sometimes anonymously, from disgruntled church members who feel the service is too old fashioned or too hip. Even if your pastor's style takes some getting used to, at least you know he's trying, so encourage him with a bit of appreciation.

4. Offer understanding. When your pastor makes a mistake (and he will, as we all do), be quick to forgive and forget it. For example, he may confuse someone's name during an introduction, forget to follow up with a phone call after your child's tonsillectomy, or make an offbeat comment during a sermon. Rather than chide him, let him know that you're ready to overlook the error, just as you would like to have yours overlooked.

5. Offer a gift. Many pastors work long hours for less-than-average pay. Stop by and mow his home lawn, take over a hot meal, or offer to sit with the kids while he and his wife have a date. Buy a longed-for book he's mentioned or donate a piece of equipment for church use. Whatever your talent or means, it's sure to be appreciated when you share it with clergy. 

Most of us expect to receive all the above things from our spiritual leaders. But let's not forget to return the blessings to them, since they are likely to need and appreciate them the same way we do.
