As the teacher hands back yesterday's quiz, you wait in gleeful anticipation, fully expecting to receive a top-notch score. Finally your quiz arrives, but at the top is a failing grade! Dismayed, you schedule an appointment to read the teacher the riot act. After all, it¡¯s her job to teach, right? You¡¯ll give her a piece of your mind¡ªif not on the quiz, then in her office!

Good or bad idea?

This is not likely to produce a positive outcome. Rather, go ahead and confer with your instructor, but follow these guidelines when you go in for your meeting:

1. Review the assignment guidelines and your work. Be sure you understand what was expected, what you turned in, and how the assignment was graded. If you are unsure about any of these, jot them down to discuss during the conference. Be specific. Instead of saying "I don't know what you expect," suggest something like this:

"I think I can do a better job next time if I can ask a few questions about the guidelines to be sure I understand them correctly."

2. Arrive a few minutes early or on time. Instructors have busy schedules, and they often meet with many students, other instructors, and administrators as well as parents. Don't make someone wait for you and then use up part of another person's appointment to finish yours. Check traffic conditions ahead of time if the weather is threatening, and find out where the instructor's office is located so you don't lose time trying to find it. 

3. Take class materials with you. If you are confused about your quiz grade, take it, along with written guidelines (if any), for your consultation with the instructor. You may wish to take previous assignments on which you received similar or better grades, for comparison. Have these organized and ready to pull out for the meeting, rather than having to dig for them through an overstuffed book bag or backpack.

4. Ask focused questions. If you're unsure about the assignment, ask the instructor to explain wording, grading criteria, or parameters. You may need to discuss the grading scale as well. If you missed just part of the answer, zoom in on that as you go over the assignment guidelines with your instructor. Be sure that the course expectations overall, as well as each assignment, is clear in your mind so that you know what you must do to get high grades. 

5. Accept responsibility. Instructors have little sympathy or patience for whiners. But they have enormous respect for students who go the extra mile in an effort to excel. Be willing to admit you could study harder or did not put forth your best effort. Ask for the teacher to suggest ways that you can do a better job next time. Most teachers will bend over backward to help students who really try.

As with other areas of life, those who take the initiative to improve their performance are apt to succeed. Don't give up when you get a low grade; get going.
