While most adults are not enamored with housekeeping, it is still novel for children. And since children strive to emulate the adults around them, kids often pretend to do the mundane chores associated with cleaning house.
Vacuums
Toy vacuums are one of the most beloved kids¡¯ products. Push toys of any type are popular, and vacuums are no exception. Add in realistic sound effects, lights and styling that makes it look just like the one in the hall closet and a toy vacuum is a sure winner. Toy models are available in upright and canister models and even include an assortment of cleaning tools and attachments. The most popular models even have a small amount of suction to make it really ¡°work.¡± Several of the real vacuum makers actually manufacture replicas of their ¡°grown-up¡± products. These manufacturers include Miele, Hoover, Dyson and Dirt Devil. Pay attention to the age recommendations on vacuums since some of the working models may not be appropriate for younger children.
Kitchen appliances and products
Playing kitchen is a classic favorite for toddlers up to pre-teens, so equip them with the tools for their gourmet adventures. Kid-sized refrigerators, ovens, sinks, microwaves and dishwashers are all favorites, sure to log hours and hours of play. Some toy kitchens are sold as single all-in-one units; others are sold as mix and match pieces. Outfit the kitchen with some resilient play food ¨C they¡¯ll ¡°cut¡± it, chew on it, mix it, blend it and throw it ¨C and baking pans, pots and utensils. The items do not need to be elaborate; kids will use their imaginations to make food out of nearly anything. Small kitchen appliances are also popular toys, with mixers and blenders leading the pack. Toasters and coffee makers are also available in toy versions.
Brooms & Dustpans
Sweeping is strangely fulfilling for children, so outfit them with their own broom and dustpan. Check the bristles of brooms to make sure they do not come out easily; some toy brooms end up leaving more debris than they sweep up. No broom is complete without a dustpan so that debris can be scooped up and moved to the trashcan. Let kids use their own broom and dustpan to pick up paper scraps after craft projects for maximum learning and cleaning fun. Dust mops are also satisfying and toddlers may actually pick up more dust and debris with a dust mop than a broom since dirt clings to the fibers.
Mops, buckets and spray bottles
While kids should not use cleaning chemicals, they can help clean with water. Let your little one fill a bucket and dip a mop to help clean the floors. A spray bottle filled with water can be used along with a sponge or small towel to wipe down counters and tables, too. Toddler not satisfied without having any cleaning solution in the water? Add a teaspoon of vinegar to the water for extra cleaning power that can be used on most household surfaces and to add a harmless sanitizing scent.
Dusting
No extra ¡°toys¡± are required to let kids help with the dusting. Outfit them with soft cloths and dusty surfaces for quick satisfaction. The new electrostatic dusting cloths hold the dust better than untreated rags so children can use them effectively without cleaning sprays. Enlist kids to dust low areas like chair rungs and baseboards to give them a project and save adult knees. |
