We¡¯ve all had that ¡°too full¡± feeling that means we are constipated, but what can you do about it?
Of course, any medical condition that persists should be seen by your health care professional. But the occasional case of mild constipation can be easily cured at home.
What is Constipation?
Constipation is defined as having fewer than three normal bowel movements in a week. Stools that are hard and dry or painful bowel movements are also symptoms of constipation. When a person is constipated, they will often feel ¡°full¡± and ¡°draggy¡±. It can even effect their mood, leaving them irritable and cranky.
Some people think you must have a bowel movement every day to be ¡°regular¡±. Doctors tell us that as long as you are having a bowel movement three times a week or more, you are fine. Of course, if you are having painful bowel movements, that can be a sign of trouble, too.
Common Treatments
Constipation is often caused by a lack of fiber in the diet. We 21st Century folks eat too much processed food and not enough fruits and vegetables. The solution is to increase your consumption of insoluble fiber. In general, fruits, vegetables and whole grain contain fiber; meat and dairy foods do not.
Beans and whole grain bread are excellent sources of fiber. Surprisingly , prune juice is not a good source of fiber. Its well known effect is caused by a laxative chemical present in the juice.
The old time herbalists would prescribe an apple and a glass of water at bedtime and at breakfast. That¡¯s one way of getting the two most important things into your body: fiber and water. You could also switch to a whole grain bread, instead of white bread.
Modern herbalists suggest flaxseed or psyllium. Both work by adding a great deal of fiber to your diet. They should both be taken with large quantities of water. Try a spoonful or two of the seeds, and two large glasses of water once or twice a day. If that doesn¡¯t get things going in a day or so, try again.
Mild dehydration can be a contributing factor to constipation. If you don¡¯t have enough water your system then your stools will be hard and dry. The obvious solution there is to drink more water. You should also avoid diuretics like alcohol and caffeine.
Just the act of moving around can help the muscles in the bowels to move things along. A long walk may be just the thing to get things moving again. Regular exercise is beneficial in many other ways as well.
Of course, prune juice has been a favorite for many years. It stimulates contractions in the intestines and increases the amount of fluid released. In essence, it makes your stools softer and moves them through the body more quickly.
How to Prevent Constipation
The cure and prevention of constipation is that old advice we¡¯ve heard so many times. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, especially the ones you can eat with the skin on. Drink lots of water, at least eight 8 oz. glasses a day. Get some exercise every day. And, like any medical advice you get on the internet, check with your family health provider if the condition persists or gets worse. |
