We all know that the best gifts are the ones that come from the heart. If you¡¯re tired of giving your loved one the same old gift of flowers and chocolates every Valentine¡¯s Day, why not try making a gift instead? Here are some tips for making homemade Valentine¡¯s gifts for your sweetie:
-- Make a t-shirt. With the help of modern technology, you can make your main squeeze a personalized t-shirt with your picture on it. To do it, all you need is a digital camera or a scanner and a printer. Take your favorite photo of yourself (or of you and your mate together) and print it out onto a sheet of photo transfer paper (sold in discount and photo specialty stores). You can then iron on the transfer to a white t-shirt. You'll have an instant one-of-a-kind gift!
-- Scrapbook. Speaking of photos, a scrapbook is another great homemade gift idea. Collect a bunch of photographs and memorabilia from trips and outings you and your loved one have taken. Be sure to include matchbooks, ticket stubs, postcards, etc. Purchase an inexpensive scrapbook at your favorite discount or craft store and compile everything into it. You will love going down memory lane as the two of you look through it.
-- Create a CD. A homemade CD full of love songs is another great way to surprise your sweetie. You will need a CD burner and the appropriate software in order to do this (many computers come with these items standard). Download songs from legal music sites-- most charge less than one dollar per song. You can then burn the collection of songs onto a CD. The software should also guide you on how to make a personalized cover for your CD. As an extra touch, include ¡°liner notes¡±-- musings on what each song means to the two of you.
-- Coupon Book. Use your PC and clipart program to make a personalized coupon book-- redeemable for fun things like ¡°One hour-long massage¡±, ¡°One candlelit dinner at a romantic restaurant¡± or ¡°One romantic evening of your choice¡±. Your honey will love redeeming the coupons!
-- Homemade Bath Oil. You can make an inexpensive bath oil by combining ? cup of olive oil or almond oil with ? cup of fragrant flower petals, such as rose petals or hyacinth. For a more exotic fragrance, add a few drops of aromatherapy oil (sold at health food stores). Pour mixture into a jar and shake until blended. Transfer to a decorative container. This will make for a nice, fragrant oil to add to bathwater.
-- Candy. Homemade candy is another inexpensive gift that you can make. To make homemade chocolate truffles combine 12 ounces of good quality semisweet or bittersweet chocolate (broken into pieces) with 1/3 cup of heavy cream. Cook slowly over medium heat until chocolate is melted. Add one teaspoon of good vanilla extract. Refrigerate mixture for about one hour or until slightly firm, then shape into one inch balls. Roll balls in cocoa powder, powdered sugar, chocolate jimmies or chopped nuts. These truffles will be a delicious and special treat for you and your loved one to enjoy together. And remember-- chocolate is an aphrodisiac!
-- Music Video. Get a friend to help you make a music video of your sweetie¡¯s favorite song. Include footage and photos of the two of you together. This project is especially easy to do if you have a digital video camera -- most PC¡¯s come with movie maker software that will guide you step-by-step on how to compile your footage into video format. If you have a DVD burner, burn the finished product onto a DVD. Don¡¯t forget to make a matching DVD cover for it!
--Romantic dinner. Prepare your sweetie¡¯s favorite dinner but give it a special twist. Turn your dining room into a romantic ¡°restaurant¡±-- just for the two of you. Use your computer to create a menu for the table and list what each course will be. Make your honey¡¯s favorite dishes-- start with an appetizer or a soup course, then a salad, then the main meal and finish with a decadent dessert. Be sure to decorate the table with candles and a vase of flowers. Romantic music in the background will make you feel as though you¡¯re really out at fancy place.
