Traditions can make the holidays more meaningful and special for your family.  Your children will cherish the memories that you create together during the annual celebrations and activities as adults, and they may even carry these traditions on with their own families one day.  Traditions also create a sense of togetherness between family members, and you will find yourself and your family looking forward to your holiday traditions even more than you look forward to unwrapping your presents.  Here are some great traditions to start with your family this Christmas season:

1. If you live in a suburban area, go caroling!  You might not be able to convince teenagers to do this if they aren＊t accustomed to the tradition, but youngsters will have an absolute blast.  If you or another family member plays a musical instrument that can be carried (like in a marching band), such as a trumpet, then learn some holiday tunes, and have the rest of the family sing along.  If you do not live in a suburban area where you would feel comfortable singing in the streets then visit local friends and extended family members to give them a caroling performance.  When you finish your caroling, you should all go back home to enjoy some hot cocoa with marshmallows!

2. Go shopping on Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving).  It is the busiest shopping day of the year, and all of the chaos at your mall and the early-bird specials will make it a memorable experience.  It might sound like a nightmare to men, but mothers and daughters will really bond over this extreme Christmas shopping adventure.

3. Build a gingerbread house.  Sure, you could go buy one at the bakery or grocery store, but that wouldn＊t be nearly as much fun as having your kids help you to create one from scratch.  Let the kids pick out decorative candies to use 每 candy canes, chocolate kisses, licorice string, etc.  Be as creative as you can be 每 you could build a gingerbread boat or a gingerbread school instead if you want!

4. Have a Christmas Eve party, just for your immediate family.  Just make it a small celebration with you and your kids 每 let each child open one present before going to sleep.  Also, read ※The Night Before Christmas§ together, and leave out cookies for Santa (and veggies for the reindeer).  

5. Bake cookies for Santa, and decorate them with colored icing and candies.  Be sure to break out all of the Christmas cookie cutters!

6. Choose a ※family§ gift 每 something that you can all enjoy together.  For example, you could get an air hockey table or a karaoke machine.  Try to come up with something that nobody will feel left out of!

7. Volunteer together to help the needy people in your area.  Serve food at a soup kitchen, or prepare meals for Meal-on-Wheels.  This tradition will teach your children to give back to the community, especially during the holiday season.

8. Watch a holiday movie together.  It doesn＊t matter what Christmas flick you choose; it＊s just fun to have a family-favorite for Christmastime.  ※It＊s a Wonderful Life§ is a timeless classic, as is ※Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer.§

9. Trim the tree.  Many families choose to buy an artificial tree rather than cutting down a fresh one, but that shouldn＊t stop you and your family from trimming the tree together.  Play some Christmas music, drink some eggnog, and decorate the tree to perfection.  You could also make a fresh popcorn garland together each year 每 decorate the popcorn with glitter and paint for a special touch.

10. Go to church.  If you are Christians, regardless of how often you attend church during the year, you should go to church on Christmas Eve or on Christmas day to remind your family about the real meaning of Christmas.
