Many people, especially when their child is very young, prefer to hire an in-home childcare provider, such as a nanny or au pair, instead of utilizing one of the larger day care centers. Hiring someone to come into your home to look after your child has its advantages and disadvantages. Some advantages are that your child will receive more one on one attention, you will not have to commute an extra distance to a child-care center and you can usually ask the nanny to work her hours around yours, so that you are not rushing wildly through rush-hour traffic in order to get to the daycare by closing time if you have an unpredictable work schedule. Disadvantages are that the nanny will be working unsupervised, her salary will cost the family more than utilizing a daycare center and you will need a back-up plan if she is sick or decides to quit without notice. If you decide to hire a nanny, there are several things that you must take into consideration.
Can you afford a nanny? You will need to pay a nanny $400-$600 per week. The price will depend on where you live, and the amount of experience that the nanny has. You will also need to plan on paying a nanny¡¯s social security taxes, since she will be your employee. One way around this is to hire your nanny through an agency, although it will cost more.
You must thoroughly screen the potential nanny. Even if you decide to go through an agency, do the screening yourself as well. You have more at stake than the agency does. You will want to check multiple references, especially employment references. Don¡¯t be afraid to ask the hard questions. Try to find out why she left her previous job, if she would be rehired, how often she called in sick and so forth. You will also want to do a background check as well.
Interview the potential nanny the same as you would interview someone for any other job. You want to find out if she has the same ideas about childcare as you do. Make sure not to ask leading questions such as, ¡°Do you also think that corporal punishment is inappropriate?¡± Most people will answer the way that they think you want them to during interviews, so ask questions like, ¡°How do you handle discipline issues?¡± or ¡°What is your childcare philosophy?¡± Ask her to tell you her likes and dislikes about the profession, and how she envisions the daily schedule of activities with your child. It is also a good idea to find out if she has been certified in first aid or CPR. If not, ask if she is willing to become certified. It is a nice gesture for you to pay for this if she is not, or if she needs to renew her certification.
You will want to make sure that the relationship will work for everyone. Her personality should be a good match for the family, particularly if you are providing room and board. Not all nannies live in, but a quite a few of them do. In this case, it is especially important to go over house rules and routines, discuss mutual pet peeves, work out in advance if she will be doing any chores for the family and if she is willing to work any extra hours for extra pay should the need arise. A nanny who is living with you can be in a vulnerable spot, and it would not be fair to raise your expectations about how many hours should be worked or how many chores should be completed after she is already functioning as a part of your family. You will want to treat her as a professional, and put the job description in writing, as well as your child-care philosophy.
In-home childcare options are not limited to nannies. You may also want to consider hiring an au pair, who is a foreign worker who has a 12-month visa. You will definitely need to provide room and board for an au pair, and there are set requirements that the au pair should meet, such as speaking English and being able to drive in the United States. Since you hire au pairs through agencies, and she is not a US citizen, you will not have to worry about paying employment taxes. Of course, you will want to make sure that the au pair also meets the same expectations that you would have for a nanny. An au pair is a good choice if you would like your family to have exposure to a different language and culture, and are looking for temporary in-home childcare. Since au pairs can only live in the US for 12 months, it can be an emotional departure if it has been a good match and she must return to their home country. As with any caregiver, you must consider attachment issues.
Moms and dads who stay at home with their children also need a break sometimes. Some people work from home as well, and may need more than the occasional babysitter. If this is the case, consider hiring a ¡°mother¡¯s helper¡± who can help you entertain and watch your child while perhaps also helping you catch up on some of the laundry. Mother¡¯s helpers can be younger, since they don¡¯t have the same level of responsibility that nannies and au pairs do. A good rate of pay is $5 to $10 dollars an hour, depending on where you live, and how experienced the helper is.
Whoever you decide to hire, try to build a good relationship. It is desirable not to have to go through the screening and hiring process repeatedly. If you make a good initial hiring decision, and facilitate good communication with your child-care provider, chances are, she¡¯ll stay for a longer amount of time. As with any employee, you¡¯ll want to focus on the positive things that she does for your family and child and let her know that she is doing a great job! If your nanny feels happy and appreciated, this attitude will be passed on to your child and your family as a whole.
Having in-home childcare has the potential to be a very good experience for all concerned. Best of luck in your search for that special person who will be such an important part of your child¡¯s life!
