Death is a frightening concept for many adults to face. Finding out about death for the first time can be even more frightening for a child. Many times, a childĄ¯s first experience with death is through the loss of the family cat. The fact that you often have to take your cat to the vet to be put down is even more traumatic. How do you help your kids cope with the death of your cat?

First, if you are taking your cat to be put down, make sure your children have an opportunity to say goodbye. Let them give the cat one last kiss or hug unless it is in too much pain to tolerate being touched. Even if your cat has died unexpectedly, try to give them the chance to say goodbye. If the sight of your cat would upset the children too much, have them say goodbye to a photo. 

Next, prepare for your petĄ¯s burial or cremation. Help the children pick out a favorite cat toy and tuck in a blankie. You may want to talk about how much pain the cat was in. For example, if a child has had a broken bone, mention that your pet hurt much worse and just wanted to stop hurting. Talk about any spiritual beliefs you have, such as how the cat will be going to be with his or her family or going to keep the angels company.  The process of an actual funeral helps children feel like they are doing something for their cat. Even if you did not keep the catĄ¯s body for burial, you may want to hold a memorial service. Make sure everyone shares a memory of your special pet. Talk about how the cat can never be replaced, but mention that he or she wonĄ¯t want the family to be sad forever. 

Simple activities can help children get through the grieving process. One activity I recommend is making a grave or memorial marker. Buy a stepping stone kit from your craft store. Follow the directions to make the stone. However, you will be putting your catĄ¯s name, dates, and an inscription on the stone. Place the stone on your catĄ¯s grave if you buried it. If not, pick a favorite spot and place the memorial stone there. When your children are sad and missing their pet, suggest going to the stone and visiting for a while. Instead of flowers, perhaps your children can place a bit of catnip on the stone. Another simple activity to help your children grieve is artwork. Have them draw pictures of their favorite memories of their pet. Help them write short stories and poems. When everything is completed, gather any photos you have and combine the artwork and photos to make a memorial album.

Finally, when your children have had the opportunity to grieve, you may want to take them to the local animal shelter to pick out a new cat. Make sure you emphasize that you are not replacing the childrenĄ¯s beloved pet, but that you all have enough love for another pet. When you bring your new pet home, suggest that your children tell him or her about your first cat and how much it was loved.
