Choosing to adopt is a big step. Once you do choose this option, there are even more options to consider! How does one go about deciding to adopt internationally or domestically?

 Actually, there are a lot of differences between the two. Let¡¯s start with domestic adoption. If you want to do domestic adoption, you can choose to go with a private agency, or a public agency, like social services. If you choose to go with a private agency, be expected to pay upwards of $20,000 for the full adoption. However, you will most likely be able to adopt exactly what you want. You will need to write a ¡°Dear Birthmother¡± letter, and send a picture. You will be able to adopt a newborn, in most states. You might even be able to attend the birth! The advantage to this is that you will be there from birth to bond with the child. You can also be as specific as you want about the child (race, age, etc.) It might take awhile before you are chosen by a birthparent, though, which can be difficult. You also will need to think about if you want to have an open adoption or not. Many birthparents who are involved in private adoptions do desire some sort of contact with their birth child, so you might want to consider that before you decide on this option. Open adoption consists of the birth parents remaining in contact with their birth child (and you). The extent of this is up to the birth parents and you. This must be agreed upon before the adoption is final! Sometimes this will consist of yearly letters and pictures, and sometimes it will consist of pictures and/or letters more frequently, or less frequently. Sometimes birth parents do not want any contact at all. It really depends on the situation and individuals. 

 If you go with a public agency like social services, you will have very different circumstances. For example, if you want to adopt a child, usually the children legally free for adoption are older, around 5 or older. If you don¡¯t mind having older children, then this could be a very good option for you. There is little to no fee to adopt a child that was/is in the foster care system. Granted, they will have their own issues- most children who are adopted out of the foster care system will have some emotional issues, seeing as they were put into the foster care system for a reason. It is very unfortunate and sad, but it is the truth. If you can grasp this and work around it, it can be a wonderful way to build a family. If you are not interested in older children, maybe foster to adopt would be a better option for you. In this situation, you could be as specific as you like about the children you take in (age, race, etc.), and if a child become free for adoption, you will be able to adopt her at little to no cost. Again, everything has a price, even if it¡¯s not monetary. You must be willing to put up with the heartache of giving a child back if they do not become up for adoption, and you must be willing to deal with a roller coaster of emotions. Also, you will have to meet and talk with the birth parents usually, and maintain a decent relationship with them, even though they may have abused their child, and you know about it. There are really no easy options, but if you really want to adopt the child, you should be willing to take these risks. 

 International adoption is another choice. First of all, there are many different countries to choose from. While looking at countries, there are some things to keep in mind. Korea, for example, is very strict, and has limitations on who can adopt, as far as mental health treatment and weight go. China has age restrictions- you must be at least 30 to adopt. Ukraine and Russia are not well known for having a lot of baby girls. China basically only adopts out baby girls. There are many things to keep in mind when you are choosing a country. Also, you must be willing to shell out dough for this option, and usually travel, as well. You can expect to pay $25,000-$30,000 for one child in most of these countries. Yes, there is a tax credit, but that only does so much. Also, most of the children are a little bit older; don¡¯t expect a newborn if you are adopting internationally. This only makes sense, since you will have to accept the referral given and the child will be born by then, and plus you will have to travel, as well. One advantage of adopting internationally is that there is usually no interference on the part of the birth parents. The birth parents have already lost their parental rights, and you will not be having an open adoption. You might have to give the country updates on the children every now and then, but not the birth parents. The birth parents are out of the picture. This can be an extremely attractive incentive for adopting internationally.
