Designs for a hand-painted clothes stand for your child¡¯s nursery can be simple or detailed and elaborate. There is an approach for every level of painting ability. Designs can be as simple as polka dots or cow spots or as elaborate as nursery rhyme or storybook characters.

Preparing to paint: Sand the unfinished wood carefully with fine sandpaper. A small power hand sander can make the job easier. Carefully remove all sawdust from the wood with a slightly damp rag.

Primer coat: Paint the entire stand with white or cream matte acrylic paint. A second coat may be required if a single coat does not cover the wood sufficiently. Allow the primer to fully dry before you take the next steps.

Base coat: Paint the entire stand with the background color you have chosen. Keep in mind that your design will show up best on either a very light or very dark background, if your design colors contrast with the background.

Free-form All-Over Design

Stripes and other geometric designs can be easily applied by hand. If straight lines are required, mask off the areas to be painted as you apply a single color at a time. Let each color dry before applying another color to avoid smearing and streaking. Animal prints, such as a cow spots, can be painted free form directly over the background color. 

Stenciling

You can purchase a wide variety of stencil designs at craft supply stores or you can create your own designs using stencil paper cut with a stencil knife. Simple designs can be traced onto stencil paper from color books and other sources of children¡¯s art. 

Working a single color at a time, carefully place the stencil over the area to be painted. Dab paint on the end of the stencil brush and apply the paint to the stand in a careful up and down dabbing motion. Be sure to cover the entire area within the opening of the stencil. Let the color dry before applying the next color. Repeat these steps until all stenciled elements have been applied to the clothes stand. If you wish, you can add additional free-hand details with a small craft brush. 

Traced designs and Free-Hand Painting

If you prefer to apply the outline of a design to the clothes stand, you can use line drawings traced from coloring books or picture books or you can sketch free hand on the primer, using a very light pencil. Once the outline is complete, you can fill the design in using craft brushes with a single color of acrylic paint at a time. 

If you are very brave, have a clear idea of what you want, and a steady hand with a paintbrush, you can paint your design directly onto the background. Using a palette or palette paper, you can work much as you would if you were painting on paper or canvas. If you are skillful in mixing and applying colors, you can work with multiple colors at one time.

Your project will be successful if you prepare the wood properly and allow yourself enough time for the paint to fully dry between layers and between colors.
