Choosing the perfect gift for someone you care about takes effort.  Knowing something about the person's interests helps make it easier to choose just the right item.  For those that frequently update their decor, or always seem to be working on a new project, home improvement items make terrific, thoughtful gifts.

One idea is to put together a large gift basket filled with all kinds of things home decorating enthusiasts love.  Look for unique sponges in different shapes and textures, and lots of paintbrushes in different sizes and styles.  Choose an assortment of craft paints in all the latest colors.  Throw in some painter¡¯s tape and a good penknife.  Add lots of colorful thread, straight pins, and anything else you would like if the basket were a gift for you.  

Tools are usually a big hit with do-it-yourselfers.  A laser level, a measuring tape, a miter box, or a stud finder will be well received by most decorating devotees.  And, don¡¯t forget about power tools.  Sanders, jigsaws, and cordless drills also make great gifts.  

Collectibles are always fun, and choosing the perfect addition to the recipient¡¯s collection is another good way to show that you care.

A note of caution when dealing with a serious decorator: you may not want to purchase something too personal.  He or she probably has very definite tastes and ideas regarding what should go into each space.  You do not want to put the person on the spot and make him or her feel obligated to display your gift if it does not really fit into the design plan. 

If you decide that your friend just has to have a particular piece, keep the receipt, and do not take it personally if he or she decides to return it.  Everyone has different tastes, and just because yours and your friend's differ, does not mean that person does not appreciate the thought.   

Instead of choosing a distinct design element, consider choosing something more casual such as candles.  Candles are a great addition to any space, and they come in plenty of styles and colors that you should be able to find something to coordinate with any decor.  Or, you might want to give a reversible table runner.  Choose one that coordinates with the recipient¡¯s existing color scheme but offers both a formal side and a casual side.  This way, the recipient can choose which look she prefers, or can change the runner as the mood strikes.

Other ideas for the serious decorator include a gift certificate to a favorite fabric store or picture framing shop, or perhaps a shopping card from the local home improvement center. Decorating books or a subscription to a decorating magazine are also nice ideas for those who enjoy adding to or updating their decor frequently.  

The best gift of all is giving of yourself.  Offer to help your friend or family member sand, prime, paint, move furniture, hang drapes or wallpaper, or anything else that may require an extra pair of hands.  You can also take a special person on a shopping trip and let him or her choose that perfect new piece to add to the space - your treat.
