Are you the life of the party every holiday season?  Are you accustomed to working an extra job at the holidays just to pay for gifts?  Does it take a full year to pay off your holiday bills for the previous year?  This year you can change your ways.  Here are some ideas you can use to give great holiday gifts without breaking the bank.

Shop all year: If you want to continue being known for always giving the best gifts, get into the habit of Christmas Shopping all year.  Dedicate a trunk or even a closet as your gift closet.  Visit all clearance sales, and most importantly going out of business sales, and fill your trunk or closet with lots of treasures.  If you are on a budget, plan to spend $50.00 to $100.00 per month on gifts so that the cost is spread out throughout the year.  If you should have another gift giving opportunity like a birthday or wedding, you can just go into your gift closet and pull out the appropriate item.  

Layaway:  Many people bypass the layaway counter assuming that it is only for the poor.  In actuality, it is a safe way to use credit.  You can plan your purchases when an item is on sale, and come back and get it when you have more money.  Of course, there are fees involved, but they are no higher than credit card charges.  This is also a great way to take advantage of sales.  Layaway also gives the shopper time to consider if they really need the item they are purchasing.  Since it has not been removed it from the store, it can always exchange it for something else.

Theme Gifts:  You can give all of your friends and relatives theme gifts.  This is done by purchasing the same, or practically the same gift for everyone.  For example, one year you can purchase T-shirts with special sayings for each person.  Another year you can give everyone a free meal at your favorite restaurant.  You can also purchase everyone a piece of jewelry appropriate for him or her.  The idea here is to buy in bulk.  When you buy several hundred dollars worth of merchandise from the same store or supplier, you will be more able to negotiate a great discount.

Make it yourself:  The least expensive way to give great gifts to everyone is to make them yourself.  Perhaps you have a special talent you can share with all of your friends and family.  If you are an artist, you can paint everyone a picture.  If you have a hobby of wood burning, or jewelry making, you can make a personalized gift for everyone.  If you are a great cook or baker, you can make cookies, pies, and cakes for everyone on your list.

Magazine Subscriptions:  The easiest last minute gifts you can purchase for family and friends both far and near are magazine subscriptions. This is also the ”°gift that keeps on giving”± as your family and friends will think of you every time they receive a new issue in the mail.   There are websites that offer a free magazine for every two purchased, and you can have them sent directly to the recipient with an announcement email and holiday card.  Be forewarned however, that if you make giving magazine subscriptions a habit, people may become disappointed if give a different gift the following year.
