Decorating a personalized hatbox is a fun way to use your creativity and imagination. The finished product can be given as a gift or used for storage or as an accent piece for your home d¨¦cor. Basic papier-m?ch¨¦ hatbox construction materials can be obtained from craft stores and department stores. There are usually many sizes to choose from. Once you have selected a hatbox to work with, you are ready to begin the process of creating.
If you are planning on personalizing a hatbox as a gift, what are the themes that the recipient would like? A little girl might enjoy a hatbox covered with butterflies or a friend may go wild over a Victorian hatbox. This is truly the part of the crafting process that makes this project personalized.
Decoupage is one of the best ways to decorate a hatbox. The process is simple and requires only a few inexpensive supplies. You will need decoupage finish (such as Modge Podge), craft glue, a 1-inch sponge brush, and scissors. Wrapping paper is an excellent source of colorful pictures that can be used to adorn the hatbox. There are also special decoupage papers available. The cut out pictures used for this project need to be relatively thin so the decoupage process will be effective. Magazines can also be a useful source for finding colorful and unique pictures. Clip art is another option for designs. Cut out the selected images and arrange them on the hatbox in a way that looks appealing. Cut around the contours of the pictures. Larger images will work well on the lid of the hatbox because you will be covering the entire surface of the lid with this technique.
Once you are satisfied with the arrangement, dab the glue in the places you wish to secure the pictures. The glue will dry clear, so rearrange the images if needed. Make sure you also cover the rim of the lid, but take care not to make the rim too thick. This may cause difficulty with closing the hatbox. Overlap all of the images until the entire lid is covered. Spread decoupage finish over the entire collage. Apply at least 2 coats of finish to the lid, but allow drying time between each application. When the finish is dried, you will notice that the colors of the pictures are vibrant and shiny.
Wallpaper border comes in many widths and designs. Try to find a width that matches the dimensions of the base of the hatbox and that coordinates well with the design of the lid. You can trim down border that is too wide. Again, make sure that you overlap the rim of the base part of the hatbox. Many borders are pre-pasted, so it won¡¯t be necessary to use glue to adhere the wallpaper. Make sure you don¡¯t get the box too damp, or the construction may weaken. Wrap the base of the hatbox with the wallpaper border. Cut a circle out of the border to use on the bottom of the hatbox. Secure in the same way.
You can add buttons, ribbons, pearls, tassels, ribbon rosettes, decorative cording, bows, dried flowers or other craft notions to put the finishing touches on this hatbox. Use your creativity and leftover craft items to make this project truly unique and personalized.
