There is nothing like graduating college. College is comparable to a marathon.  There are many who want to run it but don¡¯t because they never begin to train, and there are many who start to run it but drop out of the race as soon as it seems to get tough. Then there are those who finish the race, sweat dripping off their brow and a look of pride and accomplishment on their face. These are the college graduates. So what do you get for these college graduates as they continue on with their next life race? 

Many college graduates may be moving on to the next academic level while some may be going straight into the corporate world. Either way, a great gift would be a Palm pilot or other handheld organizer so they can keep track of addresses and phone numbers, textual notes and their daily schedule. On this same note, a leather attach¨¦ case would be a wonderful gift to secure important documents and notes, as well as serving as an upgrade for a tattered canvas backpack. A leather, silver or gold watch would be a great replacement for their plastic or canvas ¡°college watch.¡±

For many grads, the next step, in addition to securing a job, is moving out of the dorm or college apartment and into a new house. Not many college students have all they may need for a new home. A new quality pot and pan set would be a great gift, as would a new set of plates, glasses or silverware. Other welcome gifts would include decorative items like wall or mantle clocks and wall paintings. Recipe books and baking dishes or platters would be nice additions to the kitchen.

Many corporate jobs require a certain percentage of travel, so a new set of luggage, a duffel bag or a travel bag for toiletries would be a good idea. As we move from CD players to the digital world of MP3s, an MP3 player to listen to while traveling or exercising would be appreciated, as would the equipment for and a one year subscription to satellite radio. 

You will also want to take into consideration the type of work or academia the college graduate will be pursuing. For example, if the college graduate is an English major, they may love a first edition print of one of their favorite novels or an autographed copy of a book from their favorite author. A theatre major may enjoy tickets to an opera or theatrical production. A business major may be elated to receive a two-year subscription to a business magazine like Forbes or Fortune. A history major may want a nice globe for their new office or desk. 

Of course, you can¡¯t go wrong with a gift certificate. You will want to know what some of their favorite stores are, or you can get them a gift certificate for services like spa treatments, oil changes, or dry cleaning services. If thinking of a gift is making your brain hurt, then by all means, some money and a card would certainly suffice.
