Gift baskets make a wonderful surprise for birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, weddings and any other occasion that you can think of. They are the perfect choice when you would like to go in with other people on a gift, such as for an officemate¡¯s birthday. Instead of pitching in the usual five or ten dollars, each person can contribute something to the basket. This adds a personal touch that can be a delight to the recipient. At some schools, parents are getting the idea to use gift baskets as gifts to the teacher from the entire class. Gift baskets are also useful to sell in craft fairs or for fundraising events. There are many themes that you can use, and you can vary the contents to suit your price range. Try some of these basket themes to give to the individuals in your life. 

1. The Movie Critic¡ªThis gift basket contains all the items anyone needs to have a movie night at home. Good items to include are movies or a gift certificate to a movie rental store, popcorn, movie-style candy such as Mike and Ike and a couple of soft drinks. If you decide to buy movies, try focusing on a theme, such as Anime, old black and white films, foreign films, films with the recipient¡¯s favorite actor or films from the recipient¡¯s favorite genre, such as comedy. You can then add items to support your theme. For example, if your theme is films featuring a certain actor, you can include postcards of the actor, a Photoshopped card featuring the recipient and the star together, and other star memoralia. 

2. The Music Aficionado¡ªThis gift basket can range from expensive to inexpensive, depending on what you decide to put in it. An iPod is a great basket-sized gift, but you may not want to go to that much expense! Other possibilities include CD¡¯s (as with movies, a theme works well), a small radio, a gift certificate for dance lessons and any little items related to music, such as a musical note key ring. If the person is a musician, you can include items related to their hobby or profession such as new guitar strings or guitar picks. 

3. The Gardener¡ªPut some brightly colored seed packets in the basket, along with some bulbs, if it is the right time of year for them. Include small ceramic or clay pots, hand gardening tools, hand cream, gardening gloves, a gift certificate to the gardening store (compost wouldn¡¯t go over well in a gift basket¡­), and anything else that catches your eye that is gardening related, such as a decorative plate with the recipients favorite flowers on it. 

4. The Tea Lover¡ªThis is a very easy basket to make. Go to a specialty shop and purchase a variety of teas. You may want to include samplers. If you purchase any loose tea, be sure to include a tea ball to filter the tea. You may want to include a porcelain tea set with a tea cozy, or a set of unique mugs. Antique teacups and saucers are also nice for this basket. Include some delicate cookies or biscuits, and you have created a basket that will make the recipient very happy. 

5. The Coffee Lover¡ªYou could purchase a French Press, which is a small, inexpensive, relatively popular coffee-making device that is very portable. A coffee bean grinder is another idea. If the recipient has a long commute, include a nice insulated thermos. Of course you will want to include a variety of coffee beans, whole ones being the best. Add some coffee-flavored candies, such as chocolate-covered espresso beans or mocha latte jellybeans for an added boost. Since coffee is extremely popular, you will have no trouble finding additional goodies, such as magnets, to go with your coffee theme. 

6. The Busy Parent¡ªPurchase a variety of candles with relaxing scents, and a nice votive holder. Add some bath salts or fizzies, high-end milled soap and some lotion. Try making the focal point of your basket a bottle of wine, or if the person doesn¡¯t partake, some gourmet hot chocolate. A gift certificate to a spa or salon for a manicure or massage is a nice touch. 

7. The Romantic¡ªMake a bottle of wine or champagne the centerpiece for this one, and include a couple of glasses. Gourmet chocolate, candles, and fresh flowers go well in this basket, although the flowers should be incorporated into the decoration outside of the basket so that they will stay fresh, if the basket is to be enclosed. 

8. The Sports Fan¡ªTickets to a game, a ball cap, memoralia with the person¡¯s favorite team embossed on it, and even beer and nuts are good ingredients for this basket. 

9. The Crafter¡ªMake a basket with supplies and books relating to the person¡¯s favorite craft. For example, a knitting basket might include several skeins of yarn, a new pair of novelty knitting needles, handmade stitch markers, blank tags for the knitter to put on his or her work, a book of patterns and a stuffed sheep (since it is a wool producing animal). 

10. The Booklover¡ªMake a gift certificate to a bookstore the centerpiece of this basket. Conversely, if you know the person well, you could include the latest bestseller or a boxed set by his or her favorite author. Add a reading light, some interesting bookmarks and some fancy chocolates, because chocolate is always good! This is a basket that combines well with the tea-lovers basket. 

To put the basket together, select a basket that is the appropriate size, and put plenty of tissue paper or curled wood shavings in the bottom. Actually, you need not feel confined to the use of a basket. Any interesting container will do, and there are some colorful ice buckets being marketed right now that would be a great choice for many of these ideas. Once you have filled the container with the tissue or shavings, artfully arrange the items that you have bought. Make sure that the smaller items don¡¯t get lost in the bottom of the container! 

A very nice option is to cover the entire basket or container with clear, colored or patterned cellophane, and then gather it all together at the top and fasten with a big bow. Tailor your decorations to the taste and gender of the person who will be receiving the gift. Enjoy creating your gift baskets. Each one is different, and the recipient will feel very valued that you have put the thought into creating a gift so obviously created especially for him or her.
