Toddlers are very curious about everything. From the food they put in their mouth to the words that come out of yours, they study themselves, other people, and their environment for clues about the world in which they live.

Play-time provides a wonderful opportunity for nurturing their learning experiences and creativity. Whether you're a parent, a grandparent, a family member, friend, or caregiver, you may want to engage in some of the activities listed below to help the toddler in your life develop a close bond with you while learning to play creatively:

1. Hide and seek. Small children love the power they feel in pulling an adult away from grown-up activities to come in search of them. Tricking a parent or other authority figure by outsmarting that person while in hiding, and not getting caught, offers inescapable excitement for young ones. When playing this game, be sure doors to attics, basements, refrigerators, and other tight or forbidden places are locked or designated as off limit. You don't want your little one to disappear and not be able to find her!

2. "Eye-winker, nose-dropper, mouth-eater, chin-chopper" is a chanting-type activity in which the adult touches each facial area mentioned in the lyric. The toddler is apt to smile and giggle as she begins to learn the names of her facial features. And she will love the ending line that goes "koochy-koochy-koo" as you tickle under her chin. Kids love touching and tickling games as long as they're not carried to extremes or handled inappropriately. 

3. Sing-along time. Put on a favorite song and sing along, inserting the child's name in place of the character in the lyrics. For example, an old folk song uses the name of "Mary":

"Did you ever hear of sweet Mary from Pike

Who crossed the wide rivers with her husband Ike,

With two yolk of cattle and one old gray hog,

An old shanghai rooster and one spotted dog." 

Substitute your child's name for the woman's and adjust the lyrics a bit to match circumstances in the child's home. Your toddler will enjoy becoming the "star" of a popular song!

4. Draw pictures together. Exploring colors, shapes, and designs on paper with crayons opens a new world of order and representation to young children. They especially love having an adult sit beside them and draw along, then comparing pictures when both of you finish. You can draw scenes from the family, like the summer vacation in Florida, or try your hand at animals or foods. Drawing helps small children develop hand-to-eye coordination.

5. Make something from a large carton. A tunnel, a car, a house, or a cage (with open ends, of course), are fun things to make with scissors and markers as long as a parent supervises. You can also use a much smaller box about the size of a shoebox to make a mailbox, a doll's bed, or a garage for Hot Wheel cars. Making something functional helps kids to feel confident about their creative and artistic skills.

Whatever you play with your toddler, have fun doing it. But realize that games can offer learning opportunities as well. Take advantage of these special moments to make your little one feel loved and appreciated.
