Choosing Diapers

Purchasing Diapers

Though baby superstores and some discount stores do sell ¡°cloth diapers,¡± steer clear! These diapers are actually meant for use as burp cloths, and are not absorbent enough for use as actual diapers. Instead, look online for cloth diapering stores, small work-at-home-mom shops, or even auction websites for used diapers. Cloth diapers are meant to last through several children, so buying secondhand is a good way to save money on diapers.

How Many Diapers

A good guideline to determine how many diapers you will need to buy is to buy one dozen (or slightly fewer) diapers for each day you don¡¯t want to do laundry. If you want to wash every three days, for example, you would buy three dozen diapers.

Because you can use covers several times before washing them, you will not need to purchase as many covers. Plan on using two to four covers each day. If you plan to do laundry every three days, you would want to purchase six to twelve diaper covers.

Overnight Diapering

Many parents are intimidated at the thought of putting their children in cloth diapers overnight. However, diapering at night is not that different from diapering during the day. The key is to make sure there is enough absorbency to last the night. Try using two diapers at night with a wool or fleece cover.

Washing

Diaper washing doesn¡¯t need to be difficult. After a few weeks, you¡¯ll settle into a wash routine that works for your family. A basic wash routine simply involves soaking the diapers for a few hours in cold water, washing in hot water with a small amount of detergent, rinsing, and drying in the dryer. Of course, you can get more complicated if you want, but you don¡¯t have to.

Reactions of Others

You may notice that family members and friends start looking at you as if you¡¯ve suddenly grown a second head when you tell them that you plan to use cloth. Without making them feel bad for using disposable diapers, try introducing them to the benefits of cloth. Sometimes, others will feel the need to continually ridicule or talk down your parenting choices. At those times, it¡¯s best to simply state that how you diaper your children is not up for discussion.

Another potential source of frustration is daycare providers. If you will be placing your children in daycare, you may need to search for a care provider who will be willing to accept a cloth-diapered baby. Some providers will be happy to work with you on this, and some will not budge in their refusal to use cloth.
