Whether you¡¯re a new parent or expecting your sixth set of twins, you¡¯ll have to decide where your child will sleep.  Some parents keep their newborn in bed with them to enjoy the ease of co-sleeping. Others prefer a separate sleeping space of their own. They purchase a crib.  

Buying a crib, mattress and baby bedding is often an occasion of great joy for many parents.  There are lots of beautiful patterns and styles to suit both genders and every possible theme imaginable.  Unfortunately safety is sometimes overlooked in the process.  Luckily, if you follow a few simple rules you should have no trouble at all making sure your child stays safe.  Keeping the infant¡¯s bed clean is part of that process.  

One of the most important things you should remember is to keep objects in the crib to a bare minimum once the child is asleep.  Any bedding set you use for your infant should not include a pillow.  Pillows look pretty but they are unnecessary and can cause the infant to suffocate.  In addition to getting rid of pillows, you should never have baby toys or stuffed animals in the crib with the infant while he sleeps.  This rule also applies to quilts.  Do not place anything heavier than a sheet on top of the child.  On a cold day add layers of clothing.  Anything else could disrupt the child¡¯s breathing and endanger his life.  

Another good safety rule is to make sure that any baby bumpers are securely fastened to the sides of the crib.  This way the baby will not catch his little fingers in the side rails.  You should also make sure the ties from the baby bumpers are not within his reach.  Infants have been known to get hurt from pulling on string.  

Cleaning baby bedding is easy.  Simply drop the material in the wash with the rest of your items.  Contrary to assertions of manufacturers, there is no need to buy special detergents just for a baby¡¯s use.  The only thing you should do is avoid pre-treating the bedding with anything stronger than water and soap.  Highly concentrated forms of some types of cleaners can irritate a baby¡¯s skin.  If you want to extend the life of the bedding, consider purchasing bedding with different designs on each side.  This way if there¡¯s a stubborn stain you can¡¯t get out you can still display the bedding in the child's room.   Mattresses differ from bedding in that most mattresses come in one standard size and color.  

By far the most important safety tip when it comes to crib mattresses is to avoid buying and using a used crib mattress.  Medical studies have repeatedly linked usage of used crib mattresses with an increased risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or SIDS.  Even if the crib mattress is in perfect condition you must purchase a new mattress for every baby you have.  That is the only possible safe option.   

When you place the mattress in the crib it¡¯s also important to make sure that there are no gaps in between the mattress and the crib rails. A baby could very easily get parts of his body stuck in between the mattress and the crib. If there are gaps, return the mattress to the store. To extend the life of a crib mattress, treat it like a regular mattress and turn it every so often.  This will prevent saggy areas from developing.    

A crib mattress can be gently spot cleaned with plain soap and water.  Let the mattress air out before you place it back in the crib.  Better yet buy a mattress cover.  Inexpensive plastic mattress covers are available at most baby stores. Zip the mattress into the cover to fully protect it from stains.  Place a sheet on top of the mattress and you¡¯ll have a cozy and comfy place for your little one.  With a little effort both you and your baby should be able to sleep soundly and safely though the night.
