You finally have your baby's crib picked out and now you are ready to purchase a mattress. Read through these tips, head out to the store, and you'll soon have a safe mattress for your precious little bundle's daily snoozing.
If you are thinking about getting a second-hand mattress from a relative or thrift store, think again. It is better to purchase a new mattress for your baby's crib than use a hand-me-down mattress. Studies have shown a link between SIDS cases and the use of second-hand mattresses. With each new baby you have you'll want to purchase a new mattress, as well.
The first step in purchasing a mattress is determining the correct mattress size. Most cribs and mattresses sold in the United States are a standard size. Most crib mattresses will fit most standard size cribs. Due to differences in manufacturing though, crib mattress can vary slightly in length and width. The mattress you purchase should fit tightly into the crib. A good way to check to see if the mattress is fitting correctly is to use the finger test. You should only be able to slide one finger between the crib rails, on each side, and the mattress. If you can slide more than one finger along side the mattress it will not be safe for your baby. You'll need to purchase a different mattress. If, for some reason, you have purchased a crib that is not standard size you should contact the manufacturer for a mattress that is specifically made for your crib. Or you can return that crib and purchase a standard size one.
Crib mattresses come in a variety of depths. Foam mattresses can be 4 to 6 inches deep, coil mattresses 5 to 6 inches deep. Thickness does not impact the safety of the mattress. However, finding the correct size crib sheet is necessary. For your baby's safety you will want to purchase crib sheets that fit the depth of your crib mattress. Safe crib sheets will fit snugly over all corners of the mattress and tuck completely underneath it on all sides. Check all the crib sheets you have purchased for fit so you can return unsafe sheets and purchase new ones if necessary.
Next, you will want to consider mattress firmness. Firmer mattresses are safer for babies. If the mattress is too soft, babies can have trouble lifting their heads up. The best place to test for firmness is the center of the mattress. The easiest way to test firmness is to squeeze the mattress between your hands. If the mattress squeezes easily it may be too soft for your baby. Squeeze test a few different mattresses to find a firm choice. For foam mattress you can also test firmness by pushing your finger into the foam. If your finger pushes in easily the foam mattress may be too soft. If you have to push hard on a foam mattress to make an indention, you've selected a denser, safer mattress.
The two mattress styles to choose from are coil and foam. Both styles are safe for your baby. Some baby stores sell only coil type mattresses. In general, the higher the number of coils the firmer the mattress. Since other factors, such as the amount of steel used, use of border rods, and coil thickness, can contribute to firmness, always do the squeeze test to check each individual mattress. A mattress with 150 coils is usually a good firmness. Mattresses with 80 coils may be too soft, and a mattress with 250 coils won't necessarily be better than a 150 coil one. Foam mattresses weight less than coil mattresses making it easier to change the crib bedding. Foam mattress usually cost less than coil mattresses, as well. Always check for firmness of the foam mattress. Another indicator of quality for foam mattress is weight or density. A heavier foam mattress is often made of better quality materials than a lighter foam mattress. A foam mattress with a density of 1.5 pounds for cubic foot is good, although most mattresses don't list this information on their product packaging. You can also check the quality of a foam mattress by seeing how long it takes the foam to regain its shape after you've pressed on it with your finger or hand. If the foam regains its shape quickly it is made of higher quality materials.
Examine the mattresses covers. Covers with triple layers of nylon reinforced vinyl are better than those with only one or two layers. Some mattresses come with anti-bacterial/microbial layers. Most mattresses come with air vents. Some mattresses have vents which encircle the mattress, other have vents on the ends of the mattress. These vents allow air to circulate through the mattress.
Consider your budget when purchasing a crib mattress. Prices can range from $50 to $150 for foam or coil mattresses. You should purchase the best mattress in your price range. The cost of cheaper mattress compared to the cost of a higher quality mattresses usually varies only by about $50.
A few final safety notes and you'll be on your way to crib safety. Always place your baby on his or her back to sleep. Don't use pillows, blankets, or comforters in the crib.
