HAND IN ASSIGNMENTS ON TIME

Teachers are not bad people.  In fact, most of them are quite the opposite.  They chose to become educators because they enjoy teaching and they believe in the importance of acquiring knowledge.  They are on your side, and they want you to do well.  After all, your academic performance is a reflection of your teacher¡¯s job performance.  If your teacher continuously receives late or incomplete assignments from you that indicate a lack of effort on your part, then you are going to have a very hard time convincing your teacher to get rid of a bad grade.  If you want your teacher to be open to the possibility of changing a grade, then you have to make sure that you are deserving of a second chance, and that means regularly getting your assignments done on time and completing them all to the best of your ability.  Your teacher will be much more likely to help you if you have been applying yourself and striving for excellence.  It is very frustrating for teachers when a student who has put no effort into the course expects special treatment and consideration when they receive a failing grade.  If you haven¡¯t been interested in what you teacher was trying to teach, then you logically can¡¯t expect your teacher to be all that interested in what you have to say in an attempt to salvage your grade.     

DON¡¯T CAUSE TROUBLE

If you are disruptive in class or you cause your teacher lots of frustration due to a bad attitude or poor behavior or skipping class, then your teacher is not going to want to open up his or her arms to help you when you fail.  If you had shown continuous effort and interest in the subject matter of the class, then your teacher will respect your hard work, and will be much more likely to help you repair a failing grade.  Even if you normally get good grades, it is still important to be polite and respectful to your teacher and classmates in case you ever do need some help (and at some point, we all do).  Good manners and a positive attitude can go a very long way when it comes to the world of academia.  Your teacher is human, and as a human, your teacher is able to hold a grudge.  If you have irritated a teacher all year, and then you fail the final paper and you want to fix it, you are going to be out of luck.  Teachers do not reward bad behavior ¨C and that is good, because neither does an employer, and school is all about preparing for adulthood and entering the workforce.  If you were working somewhere and you were constantly causing problems or showing up late, then your boss will not want to give you a raise or vacation time.  In fact, they might get rid of you altogether, which would be the school equivalent of failing.       

ASK FOR HELP

If your teacher sees that you are actively trying to do a great job in class, then he or she will want to help you achieve great success.  If you are unsure of something that you are going to be writing a paper about or that you are going to be tested on, then you should promptly ask for some help from your teacher.  That way, if you do end up failing an exam or a paper, at least your teacher is well-aware that you were trying ¨C you even asked for extra help.  If you are putting in the effort, then your teacher will recognize that.  When you get back the failing grade, you should ask for additional help so that you will not make the same mistakes again.  Even if you cannot convince your teacher to change the grade if you re-write the paper or re-take a test, you should still strive for understanding and mastery of the material that you are taught.  If you do not understand your teacher¡¯s explanation of a subject, then you should not hide that fact just to be polite.  Your teacher should understand that different students require different types of instruction, and therefore if you do not understand it the way that it is first presented to you, your teacher will know to take a different approach so that you grasp all of the concepts.    

REQUEST A SECOND CHANCE

If you are a good student and you try hard, but you failed a test or paper, your teacher is likely to allow you to have a second shot so that you can make things right.  Everyone makes mistakes, even the best of students.  Explain to your teacher that you tried your best, but you still failed.  After you have received some additional help from your teacher (so that you don¡¯t just make the same mistakes twice), your teacher is highly likely to accommodate your request to re-do the paper or re-take the test.
