Fibromyalgia is disorder that is considered chronic is still being researched a great deal. The population affected by fibromyalgia is 80% female in gender. The cause of fibromyalgia is still a subject of study but certain occurrences are known to bring the symptoms of this condition on. Such occurrences are said to trigger the beginning of fibromyalgia and include: contracting an infection, having lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, hypothyroidism or being involved in an automobile accident.
Pain is probably the most prevalent symptom associated with fibromyalgia. The pain does not originate from the bones or joints but rather from the soft tissues that are found around joints and throughout the entire body in the skin and organs. The pain of fibromyalgia can be felt anywhere in the body and the amount of pain might be greater in the areas of the body that are taxed the most and might be different from one day to the next. Sometimes the pain of this disorder causes the individual with it to need to alter their lifestyle drastically while in others the pain causes only slight discomfort and no need for alteration of lifestyle. Muscles of the individual with fibromyalgia often feel a burning sensation or as though they have been stretched or overworked. Sensations of tingling of numbness especially in the hands and feet areas often are reported by fibromyalgia patients as well. Muscles often become spastic and might jerk at times. Individuals with this condition often compare it to the ¡°aching¡± feeling associated with a severe case of the flu. Neither permanent disfigurement nor a decreased life span are the results of fibromyalgia.
Another symptom commonly ascribed to fibromyalgia is fatigue. Patients state a sensation of never feeling they have received an adequate amount of sleep, even after they have had the recommend length of sleep hours. Many individuals with fibromyalgia have been found to not stay in the deepest state of sleep for adequate periods of time which is likely to cause such sensation. A closely related issue for the individual with fibromyalgia is that it often results in these individuals having difficulty in thinking through things. They often have difficulty with multi-tasking. A decreased amount of coordination could also be symptomatic of fibromyalgia. Many diagnosed with the disorder report having a feeling of swelling in their arms and legs.
Other symptoms of fibromyalgia include: a feeling of being stiff (especially after waking up or after having been in the same position for a long period of time), pain and bloating in the stomach, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, headaches, facial/head and jaw pain, excessive menstrual difficulties in females, overactive bladder symptoms, skin sensitivities, chest pain, dizziness, excess sensitivity to things such as scents, lights, noises and touch.
In 1990 Fibromyalgia was assigned specific criterion for diagnosis by the American College of rheumatology. Prior to that, it was usually diagnosed as other conditions. A diagnosis of fibromyalgia is not something that can be achieved by neither blood tests nor x-rays but by a complete history and physical exam by a health care provider. There are certain tender points on the body that a provider should check to discover if the patient, whom is suspected to have fibromyalgia, has pain upon touch of these eighteen points. Other causes of the symptoms in question must also be ruled out.
Treatment of fibromyalgia varies with the scope and severity of symptoms as well as the prescribing provider. Treatment might include medication to aide the patient in obtaining enough deep sleep, relieve pain or relax muscles and/or therapy, exercise, relaxation and biofeedback, massage and the type of care provided by a chiropractor.
Research on fibromyalgia is on-going and one of the aspects of research looks at its¡¯ relationship to genetics. A link to genetics is highly suspected, especially in the passing of the disorder from mothers to their daughters. Patients with this condition should expect more information on Fibromyalgia to be gained, especially the possible establishment of a genetic link. |
