Many people refer to infant formula as ¡°milk¡±. Formula is a type of milk since it nourishes a baby much in the same way mother¡¯s milk nourishes and protects against diseases and infection. Although breastfeeding is best for babies up to 12 months of age, formula is widely used by many moms. Milk alone does not have all of the necessary vitamins and minerals required by a rapidly growing baby, and the digestive systems of babies under the age of 12 months are not mature enough to handle all of the components of milk.
Although milk is not recommended due to an absence of necessary vitamins and minerals, many baby formulas are milk-based. These milk-based formulas are available with and without iron. Your pediatrician will advise you as to what type of formula is right for your baby¡¯s particular needs.
Soy-based baby formula does not contain milk. This type of formula is often recommended for babies with digestive problems or for those who are sensitive to milk-based formula. Soy formula is just as nutritious as milk-based formula, and it is easier to digest.
There are newly developed formulas available that contain special ingredients otherwise only found in the contents of breast milk. These ingredients are ¡°DHA¡± and ¡°ARA¡±, and they are said to assist in brain and eye development.
There are various types of milk for available for babies, and they are prepared in a number of different ways. The type you choose depends largely on the recommendation of your health care provider and your personal preference.
One type of milk available for babies comes in powder form, and it is typically packaged in a cardboard canister with a plastic lid. A measuring scoop is included for accuracy and convenience. This is the least expensive of all types of milk available for babies. To prepare the milk, it is recommended that you mix one scoop for every 2 ounces of water. Either prepare the milk one bottle at a time, or prepare a larger quantity in a pitcher. If you are unsure about the quality and safety of your water, prepare the milk using bottled water. Before feeding, make sure the powder is thoroughly dissolved by either shaking or stirring the formula.
Concentrated liquid is another type of milk commercially available for babies. This type of milk is a little more expensive, but some find it easier to prepare. The consistency of the prepared formula is thicker than the powdered variety, and some mothers prefer it for that reason alone. Although it is thicker, it has no more vitamins and minerals than the powdered variety. To prepare concentrated liquid, it is recommended that you mix equal parts of formula and water. One can is 13 ounces, so it¡¯s best to prepare it in a pitcher and fill bottles either in advance or on demand.
Ready-to-feed milk for babies is certainly convenient, but many find it cost restrictive. It¡¯s by far the most expensive milk available for babies. It¡¯s available in ready-to-feed bottles that come complete with nipples, or you can buy cans of various sizes. Preparing this milk is a matter of simply opening the can or bottle. People often prefer this type of milk for their baby if they are traveling, or if they don¡¯t have time for other methods of preparation.
The type of milk you choose to prepare for your baby is up to you. It¡¯s a matter of cost versus convenience. Talk to you pediatrician or health care provider regarding any health concerns you may have regarding your baby¡¯s diet. They understand the needs of your baby and can advise you accordingly. |
