Often, baby-proofing your home involves protecting your child from stairways or other unsafe areas of your home with a baby gate.  These gates can be hardware-mounted or pressure-mounted, wooden or plastic, and in a variety of sizes to fit doorways and openings between rooms.  But as with any baby accessory, not all gates are created equal for all uses ¨C and there are important safety guidelines to follow to protect both the children and the adults in the home from safety gate accidents.

In choosing a safety gate, first consider how long you¡¯ll be using it.  If you¡¯ll have small children living in or visiting your home for a few years, a hardware-mounted gate may make more sense than a cheaper pressure-mounted gate that has to be removed completely every time you want to go through it.  Also, think quality: consider how destructive small children can be and choose a gate that is sturdy enough to take years of use and abuse.

Second, consider the area you¡¯ll need the gate to protect.  A pressure gate should not be used at the top of a stairway, because a child leaning on the gate could cause it to fall ¨C with disastrous consequences.  However, a pressure gate at the bottom of a stairway is fine for preventing a baby from climbing the stairs, with a hardware-mounted gate at the top of the stairs to prevent falls.

Both hardware-mounted and pressure-mounted gates come in different styles.  Hardware-mounted gates may open completely, like a door, or may be a ¡°walk-through¡± style in which only part of the gate opens (these are usually longer gates designed to fit between rooms).  With a walk-through gate, adults should take care not to trip over the ¡°bottom threshold¡± that runs along the floor and joins the two sections of the gate.  For this reason, safety experts recommend always leaving the gate closed when not in use to lessen the chance of accidents (and to prevent the parents forgetting to close the gate when the baby is around).

Pressure-mounted gates also come in two basic varieties, one being the kind that has to be fully removed to go through it, and the other being a walk-through model.  The first kind of pressure-mounted gate is better for low-traffic areas, because of the hassle involved in removing and replacing the gate to pass through the area.  The walk-through model is easier to use and can usually be opened and closed with one hand ¨C a definite plus for busy parents carrying groceries or children.  (Again, however, pressure gates of any kind should not be used at the top of a staircase, even if they seem very secure.)

It is also important not to use a safety gate intended for pets as a child safety gate, because the openings in the gate may be large enough or square enough to provide footholds for a child who wants to climb over it.  

With child safety gates ranging in size from about 25 inches to as much as 30 feet, and some that even telescope, it is easy to find a gate that is a perfect fit for your home.  Read the gate¡¯s installation and usage instructions carefully, make sure the locking mechanism works well, and remember that no gate is a substitute for adult supervision.
