Children excel in school in a variety of ways. They are organized, turn in assignments on time, test well, and participate in class. What about those children who have difficulty with one or more of these tasks? If they struggle to complete and hand in homework assignments, generally their other academic work will also suffer. What can you do to help your child?

Completing homework assignments is a very important part of a childĄ¯s school day. Often, children simply donĄ¯t bring the assignments or the books home. If you donĄ¯t see any books, you may not realize that your child has homework. In order to remedy this situation, the first step you should take is to contact your childĄ¯s teacher. Call the school office and set up an appointment to meet with the teacher, and have a list of questions and concerns on hand to save both you and the teacher time. 

Some teachers have specific days that certain homework is assigned. If your childĄ¯s teacher follows a set schedule, ask if she would mind copying the schedule for you. Some teachers make a weekly calendar that includes daily class work and homework assignments. If the teacher tells you that she hands this out every Monday, tell your child that you expect to see that calendar every Monday afternoon. If she is still not bringing it home, you may have to deny her certain privileges, such as less television or computer time, until she becomes more responsible. 

Most teachers will be glad to communicate weekly with parents through e-mail. Ask your childĄ¯s teacher if she would keep in contact with you in this manner. If your teacher does not have a weekly schedule, you can purchase a planning book for your child. Have him ask his teacher or teachers to sign it each day, indicating whether or not he has any homework. Let his teacher know that you will be checking this planner daily. He should be the one to write in his assignments, and then all the teacher has to do is sign it. Most teachers do not have time to write assignments down individually for children, and this will also teach your child to be more responsible.

If you normally pick your child up at school, you can ask to see his daily plan. If you notice that he has homework in certain subjects, make sure he has brought the correct books home before you leave the school grounds. If you donĄ¯t pick your child up, he will have to be responsible for not only knowing his assignments, but also bringing home his books. If he doesnĄ¯t do this, tell him you will take away some of his privileges until he becomes more responsible.

Once your child has gotten into the habit of bringing his assignments and books home, you still have to make sure that he does his homework. Many parents are so concerned about their child completing his homework that they end up doing much of the work themselves. This will not help your child, and it will actually discourage him from developing good study habits. Homework should be assigned so that students can reinforce the knowledge they have learned at school. If parents are doing this homework, then the child is not getting the practice they need. 

Be sure your child has a good place to work that is away from outside distractions, such as the television or computer. Although she might prefer working in her room, if she needs guidance, it will be more beneficial for her to work in an area that you can easily access to help her, such as the dining room or kitchen. 

If she needs your help, try to do a few examples for her, and then you can have her do some problem on her own. Ask her specific questions about her homework, and check her work when she has finished. Try to refrain from correcting her mistakes, however. Instead, show her which problems are incorrect, and ask her to try again. 

Obviously, if you feel that the work she is doing is too difficult or too much, you can always contact the teacher. It may just be that your child needs extra instruction or practice to master a certain skill. By communicating with the teacher and teaching your child to be more responsible, however, your child can become a more successful student.
