Traveling with your baby doesn¡¯t have to be difficult. If you plan carefully and use some common sense, you and your baby can enjoy traveling together. One of the first and most important points to remember when traveling with your baby is to remain flexible. Don¡¯t expect your child to stick to her regular schedule if she is away from home, and try to be more tolerant if she is not as happy as she normally is.
Often, small children become cranky and slightly overwhelmed during a family vacation simply because they are not following their routines. Try not to plan too many activities each day. While you might enjoy covering a lot of ground and seeing a lot of new sights, this may be too much for your baby or toddler. Try to make sure that your child has opportunities to rest.
Even if your baby must skip her naps, try to get her into bed at night as close to her bedtime as possible. It may be difficult for your child to g to sleep in a strange place, so be sure to bring along a comfort item for her, such as a blanket or favorite toy. It may be hard for her to settle down, so try to do something quiet with her before bedtime, such as reading a book or watching a short video.
Toddlers will not enjoy being confined for very long periods of time. If your child is going to have to sit still for tours, train rides, car rides, presentations, plays, and other activities, give her plenty of opportunity to run and play before she must be confined again.
If you are going on a long car or airplane ride, pack a goodie bag. This bag can have some favorite and familiar toys plus a few surprises. Save the surprises until your child becomes too restless to settle down to sleep or to play with her familiar toys. Pull out one new toy or book every hour or so.
Bring along some nutritious snacks and plenty of liquids, including water. If you know you will be traveling during your child¡¯s mealtime, you can bring some of her favorite foods along or order them at a restaurant. Invest in one of the molded plastic bibs that catch food spills. This should cut down or eliminate the need to change your child¡¯s clothing as often.
You will want to pack a lightweight stroller and/or a comfortable baby backpack carrier. If you are going to fly, the Federal Aviation Administration recommends every child under the age of two be restrained in a car seat. Children can be severely injured or even killed if the aircraft experiences turbulence. If you do not purchase a ticket for your baby or toddler, however, ask your stewardess if there is an extra seat available for your child. Ask to be seated over the bulkhead, which is considered one of the more stable areas of the plane. Have your baby or toddler suck on a bottle or breast during the plane¡¯s take off and landing to reduce ear pain. Be sure to pack a carry-on bag that includes essential baby supplies.
Before you travel, you may want to call ahead to your hotel. If you are not bringing a portable crib, ask the hotel to place a crib in your room. Many hotels will also prepare the room for a baby by covering outlets and performing a few other baby proofing procedures. You may need to bring your own baby proofing supplies, however.
As you pack for your trip, try to remember all of the daily items your baby or toddler uses. You¡¯ll want to pack enough diapers for your travel time, but you can buy more diapers when you reach your destination. Don¡¯t forget to bring medicines that you don¡¯t use daily, such as acetaminophen, gas drops, teething gel, etc. You¡¯ll also need to bring diaper rash ointment, wipes, baby thermometer, vitamin drops, formula, pacifiers, bottles, changing pads, burp clothes, disposable bibs, disposable place mats, Ziplock baggies, and anything else you normally use for your child.
Planning ahead and being flexible will allow you and your child to have a more pleasant trip. You don¡¯t have to avoid traveling just because you have a baby. You just need to be more organized. Your baby will enjoy seeing new sights and meeting new people as long as she has a few comfort items and the security of knowing you are with her. |
