Of all of the milestones in the life of a toddler, the first trip to the dentist is a big one.  Many dentists recommend that a child receive his or her first dental exam by the child¡¯s second or third birthday, while some dentists even recommend an initial exam once the child¡¯s first tooth comes in.  Whatever the case, and depending on your child¡¯s prior experiences with doctors in general, the first trip to the dentist can be a harrowing experience. Here are some tips to help you prepare your toddler for that first big trip to the dentist.

-- Beforehand, teach your child about the dentist with books and videos. Many popular children¡¯s shows, such as ¡°Blues Clues¡±, ¡°Caillou¡± and ¡°Arthur¡± have wonderful episodes that deal with going to the dentist. Some great children¡¯s books about going to the dentist include ¡°Barney Goes to the Dentist¡± by Dennis Full and ¡°Just Going to the Dentist¡± by Mercer Mayer.

-- Practice good dental hygiene with your child at home. If your child doesn¡¯t brush his or her teeth on a daily basis, he or she is not going to like a stranger doing it.  Get in the habit of cleaning your child¡¯s teeth and gums early on. For children under the age of two, be sure to use fluoride- free toothpaste or gel and a soft toothbrush.

-- Show your child what the dentist will do. Gently brush your child¡¯s teeth and hold a small mirror and count the teeth in his or her mouth. Explain to your child that the dentist has special equipment that helps to take care of our teeth. Let your child help you brush and count your teeth as well.

-- Let your child talk to a favorite friend or relative about going to the dentist. If your child hears how brave cousin Sammy was at the dentist, he or she may get excited about it and want to follow suit.

--If your insurance policy will cover it, try to take your child to a pediatric dentist. Pediatric dentists have offices that are much more kid-friendly and, let¡¯s face it, things don¡¯t look as big as scary as they do at an adult dental office. In addition, pediatric dentists are accustomed to frightened children and their experienced staff can help to comfort your child if he or she becomes scared.

-- Let you child bring a favorite toy or stuffed animal to the visit. A familiar object will help to make your child feel more comfortable and at ease.

What not to do:

-- Don¡¯t let your child accompany you to your dental appointments. Your child will likely be frightened of the loud noise and big equipment, and may not understand what the dentist is doing to Mommy or Daddy. Remember, a routine appointment for you will probably be much more detailed than your toddler¡¯s first visit.  That said, if you intend to use your regular dentist for your toddler¡¯s dental care, you should plan to stop into the office with your child prior to the first visit to show him or her around and to meet the dentist and the office staff. 

-- Don¡¯t make false promises. Not every dentist has a treasure chest full of prizes waiting at the end of the visit. You can safely promise your child that he or she will probably receive a brand new toothbrush and perhaps offer to buy him or her a small token after the visit.

Finally, if your toddler has a meltdown when you get to the dentist¡¯s office and can¡¯t be consoled, you may want to step back and wait a few months for that first visit. By the time your child is closer to 3 ? or 4 years old, you will better be able to reason with him or her. Over time, your child will come to realize that the dentist¡¯s office is not a scary place and that the dentist¡¯s job is to help keep your family¡¯s teeth healthy!
