There are so many educational software packages for children that it seems impossible to pick. Some educators attribute nothing but negatives to allowing children to play on the computer. A new study shows however that toddlers who had access to a computer had a higher estimated IQ and better school readiness. Computers are good supports for learning, but time on them should be limited just as television is. The difference for the computer was the type of program being played. Computer-based learning software was responsible for the better scores. Video games had no effect on school readiness.
Features of educational software vary according to the targeted age of the child. Several software companies that create software that takes a child from preschool through high school. If your child loves one game in the series, it is probably a safe bet to stick with that line of software. Affordable educational software can be found from discount stores to discount areas in electronic stores. The characters in the program do not have to be a recognizable cartoon figure. Actually, any company can license the cartoon characters to make a computer game so the quality may vary greatly from the television show.
Educational games do not have to be boring to be effective. Children learn from play and the younger the child, the more fun the software should be. They do not have to know that they are being taught something. Software games for younger children should be able to work with or without a mouse click. Find games that allow children to succeed in general ways. Preschoolers should not have to give a precise answer in order to move on in the game. Games that automatically advance in levels based on the child's performance are good. The parents do not have to be constantly watching to know when to make the game harder. They can be surprised later at how fast their kid advanced.
Look for games that teach colors, shapes, letters, numbers and sounds. Make sure that there are not long stretches of animation as this can bore children and turn them off the game. There are plenty of web sites that review children's software. Forums where parents can give their opinionson a product are a good read. Make sure that you can return the software for at least store credit if it turns out the program will not run on your system. Older software may not be able to handle newer computers will large amounts of memory and speed. On the other hand, your computer may not be current enough to run the newest games.
Once your child has learned how to print, it may be a good idea to buy a paint programs with a built-in monitor to prevent excessive printing. Be prepared to unplug the printer if necessary because printing can be as much fun as the game itself. Special computer accessories are probably unnecessary expenses if you are trying to keep costs under control. Studies show children gravitate back to the mouse as it typically has the best control for the program.
