Diapers are essential for babies and small children.  The invention of disposable diapers made the diaper changing procedure more convenient for parents.  Materials and chemicals used to make disposable diapers have been blamed for diaper rash and allergies.  Some say cloth diapers are the answer, but then others say cloth diapers are the culprits of severe diaper rash because they are not as absorbent.  One more argument is that your child could develop an allergy to the detergent used to wash the cloth diapers.  All of these opinions make sense, so what is the answer?  Do diapers (any kind) play a role in causing diaper rash and allergies?  

The fact is diaper rash can be caused by several factors like chemical sensitivity, food allergies, soap and lack of air circulation plus bacterial build-up on tender skin. Babies get diaper rash because they have ultra sensitive skin; you combine that with moisture, chemicals and bacteria from urine and stool rubbing back and forth on their tiny bottom and you get rash flare-ups.

Some things you can do to prevent diaper rash are change diapers regularly, use alcohol-free/fragrance-free wipes or just a wash cloth with water, wash cloth diapers with a ? cup vinegar to clean out any excess detergent, and try different brands of diaper to find one that fits well to reduce friction. If you see a rash just starting to form you can try a warm bath and wash the affected area with a mild, fragrance free soap.  By cleansing the area early you may prevent the bacteria from spreading and stop the infection from worsening.

There are several common types of diaper rash that you may encounter.  Here are the most common and their descriptions:

? Yeast rash, which is caused when yeast in the intestines invades.  Antibiotic use is a common cause of this kind of rash.  It looks red, raised and patchy.  Anti-fungal creams like Clotrimazole and Nystatin are used to treat a yeast rash.

? Intertrigo rash occurs around the diaper area in the skin fold where it rubs together.  This rash has a red burn-like appearance and can be treated with white petroleum diaper ointment.

? Allergy ring is caused by certain kinds of food, especially acidic foods such as tomato-based and citrus.  This rash is red ring around the baby¡¯s anus. For treating this rash you should discontinue the suspected food and use over-the counter diaper ointment.

? Intertrigo rash is when bacteria invade damaged skin. You will see coin-sized blisters or red raised patches that leak a honey-colored crust-like discharge.  Prescription antibiotics and preventive measures are good treatments for this type of rash.

Diaper rash is common and hard to avoid when you have babies and young children.  It can be extremely uncomfortable for your baby because it occurs in such a sensitive area.  The best way to treat it is try to prevent it by using the prevention tips listed above.  If you find your child has severe diaper rash that cannot be treated by over the counter petroleum cream or white-zinc ointment then you might want to look into other factors causing the diaper rash.  Consult your doctor about food allergies, illness and chemical allergies. You may need a prescription to treat these kinds of rashes.  Your child will be wearing diapers for at least the first 2 years of their life so why not try to make the diaper experience a positive one for both you can your baby?
