A lot goes into any furniture choice. The piece you choose has to be the right size, complement existing decor, last for a certain amount of time, and cost the right amount. When you are choosing furniture for a child, add two more requirements: the piece must be child friendly, and the parent and child must agree on the choice.
A desk for your child's study area needs to meet these requirements and more. In order to choose a desk that you will be happy with and that your child will use, consider function, size, and safety first.
Function
What do you expect your child to use his or her desk for today, next year, and ten years from now? The desk you choose will need to accommodate all of these functions. Children usually use their desks for homework as well as play, so make sure there is ample space on the desktop. Drawers or shelves are important to hold paper, pencils, craft supplies, and treasures.
As your child grows, he or she will probably want to use his or her desk for a variety of functions. Whether or not you have immediate plans to put a computer on the desk, choose one that can hold either a laptop or a desktop computer. If Grandma surprises your little darling with a computer for his or her birthday or eighth grade graduation, you won't have to replace the desk you chose so carefully. A desk that is versatile enough to be a study area, a play surface, and a computer workstation will last into your child's adulthood.
Size
The size of the space and the size of the child are equally important when choosing a child's study desk. Decide where in your home you want to put your child's new desk, and then decide where in that room the desk will fit best. If your child will use the desk for homework, it makes sense to put the desk somewhere that is relatively quiet, but still someplace that parents can easily monitor. Measure the width and depth of the space you've chosen, and take those measurements with you when you shop. Consider height as well. Some desks will fit nicely under a window, while others will not.
Children grow, and the most useful desk will grow with them. If you have a large family or if you are buying a desk that you know you'll only use for a few years, then a desk designed for children may be appropriate. Pre-teens will not be comfortable at a desk designed for children, though. Purchasing an adjustable height desk may be a good alternative for an older child. Found in a variety of materials and styles, adjustable height desks will fit your child for a longer period of time.
Safety
Always consider safety when purchasing furniture for children. The desk you buy may be used as a fort, a chair, or a ping-pong table. Be sure it's up to the challenge. If you are purchasing a desk you'll need to assemble, check out the model at the store. Shake it, sit on it, and bump into it. If it wiggles easily, it is unsafe. A computer monitor on a rickety desk could fall, causing injuries. Also, try to find a model without sharp corners that children could fall into.
While function, size, and safety may be your main concerns, they may not be at the top of your child's list. Choose a couple of desks that fit your specifications, then make the final decision with your child. Make it exciting by talking about how to personalize the desk, making it special. If all goes well, your son or daughter will have a desk that will be used for many years. |
