When you think of cloth diapers you might think of an antiquated garment that no one could possibly use anymore.  Many mothers today are deciding to use cloth diapers on their babies and abandoning the disposable type.  Cloth diapers offer many benefits to your child that may outweigh the convenience of disposable diapers.  Cloth diapers are cost effective because they can be used many times, and they are environmentally friendly because they don¡¯t take up space in landfills.  Cloth diapers offer your baby comfort and cause fewer rashes than plastic diapers.  The only inconvenience you might experience when you use cloth diapers is the washing of the diapers.

You may be lucky enough to have a nearby diaper service that can supply you with whatever diapers you need. Diaper services pick up soiled diapers from your home each week and replace them with clean diapers.  Some diaper services even provide you with the diaper pail to keep soiled diapers in.  The weekly cost of a diaper service isn't much more than the weekly cost of disposable diapers.

If you decide not to use a diaper service you will need to buy your own diapers.  Cloth diapers can last through two or more babies so don¡¯t be afraid to spend extra money on the better quality brands.  You should purchase at least three dozen diapers to start with.  You will also need to purchase pins or diaper covers with Velcro fasteners.  If you don¡¯t use diaper covers you will need to use nylon or plastic pants over your baby¡¯s cloth diaper to protect from leaks.  You will also need a diaper pail or a container with a lid to keep soiled diapers in until laundry day.

When your child has soiled his cloth diaper, always shake any loose excrement into the toilet before washing.  You may want to rinse soiled diapers in cold water before putting them in the diaper pail.  Some moms like to put cold water into their diaper pail to keep stains from setting while they wait for laundry day. When you wash soiled diapers always use cold water and detergent for the wash cycle and a hot water rinse cycle with a bit of vinegar or baking soda added.  Fabric softener will reduce the absorbency of your cloth diapers and the heat from clothes dryers will shrink them.  Bleach will cause your diapers to disintegrate over time. Take your diapers straight from the wash and hang them up to dry.  If you hang your diapers outside, the sun will help bleach away any stains.

Cloth diapers may be beneficial to helping children toilet train at an earlier age.  Disposable diapers draw the moisture away from your child and he may not be able to tell when he is wet.  When a child wears a cloth diaper he will immediately know when he is wet.  Being wet is uncomfortable and as soon as your child realizes that he can prevent this by using the toilet he will quickly choose to be trained rather than to keep wearing wet diapers.
