If you are looking for a fun and innovative theme for this year¡¯s Christmas tree, create a playful tree with an homage to children¡¯s games. 

CLASSIC GAMES TREE

Supplies

- multi-colored lights, blinking or non-blinking

- hot glue gun and glue

- ribbon or string

- ornament hooks

Select as many as you like from the following supplies:

- brightly colored pawns or other game pieces

- game cards, paper money

- dice

- spinners

- egg timers

For the game pieces and cards, if you don¡¯t have old game sets stashed in your attic or basement visit garage and rummage sales. Old board games are commonly sold at these events and it doesn¡¯t matter if pieces are missing. Online auction sites are another ready source for used games. The best games to use are ones with many pieces and cards. Some classic games that provide plentiful and distinctive parts are Candy Land, Hi Ho Cherry-O, Monopoly, Checkers and Chess. 

Preparing the ornaments:

Using the hot glue gun, attach small loops of ribbon or string to each plastic or metal playing piece or game part. Either use the loop to hang the ornament or slide an ornament hook through the loop. For paper game parts such as cards and money, use a hole punch to create a hole at one end. Slide a ribbon through the hole and knot it to make a loop. Alternatively, paper pieces can be strung together to create a festive game-themed garland. For the top of your game tree, attach a spinner, egg timer or other large game object. 

Decorating the tree:

Place multi-colored lights on the tree and hang the game pieces from the tree¡¯s branches. Game ornaments can be used in a wreath or to decorate a garland as well. 

SCRABBLE TREE

A Scrabble tree is sure to spell fun for the whole family. 

Supplies

- white or other single color lights, blinking or non-blinking

- hot glue gun and glue

- ribbon or string

- wide wired ribbon

- ornament hooks

- one or more Scrabble game sets

Preparing the ornaments:

Using the scrabble letters of your choice, form them into short horizontally or vertically spelled words with a Christmas theme. For example: ¡°noel¡±, ¡°joy¡±, ¡°peace¡±, ¡°merry¡±, ¡°angel¡± and ¡°xmas¡±. Use the hot glue gun to adhere the letters of each word together and allow the glue to coo. Then, attach a string or ribbon loop onto the top of the word.  Using the hot glue gun, attach small string or ribbon loops onto remaining individual letters. Attach ribbons to the letter trays. For additional decorations, add small score-keeping pencil ornaments. 

Decorating the tree:

Place the lights on the tree, wrapping some firmly around each major branch.  Festoon wide wired ribbon through the branches to create a garland. Hang the word and letter ornaments from the tree. Place a vertical ¡°angel¡± word at the very top of the tree.  

Note: this is a great use for that Scrabble set with the lost J.

MR. TREE HEAD

The features and accessories of Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head make charming and playful decorations for a Christmas tree. 

Supplies

- Christmas lights

- hot glue gun and glue

- ribbon or string

- ornament hooks

- floral wire

- two or more Mr. or Mrs. Potato Head sets

Preparing the ornaments:

Add a face and feet to one potato figure; this one will be used for the tree topper. Using the hot glue gun, attach small string or ribbon loops onto remaining pieces. 

Decorating the tree:

Wrap the lights onto the tree. Hang the facial feature and accessory ornaments onto the tree. Use floral wire to attach the decorated potato head to the top vertical branch of the tree. You may want to cut wings out of cardstock or heavy paper to turn it into a ¡°potato angel¡±.
