Whether you live in the South or just want to look like you do, a Southern-themed tree is fun to create! Are you drawn to the elegance of Victorian days or the charm of country casual? Do you want a whimsical, playful tree? All of these moods (and more) can be created with Southern Christmas trees.

Traditional Southern elegance is inspired by the Victorian era. To create this mood, start by covering your tree in hundreds of white lights. Tuck the lights far back between the branches (electric candle lights also help to add a traditional feel without the fire hazard of real candles). Gold and deep red are two beautiful, classic color choices. Pick up gold crepe paper at your local craft or hobby store to use for garland---scrunch the paper and wrap it diagonally around the tree. For a stream-lined elegance, simply add dozens of small red velvet bows, or you can add etched glass balls and other elaborate Victorian-style decorations for a more lush look. Top your traditional Southern tree with a large red velvet bow, an intricate gold star, or a ceramic or etched glass Victorian angel.

If your home decor is more country casual than formal, then you might prefer to have a tree decked out in country charm. Start stringing the popcorn and cranberries---that homemade garland is essential to the down-home Southern look. Wrap strips of checked or gingham fabric between the popcorn and cranberries garland, or make or buy gingham ribbons and bows and hang on the branches. For ornaments, visit your local craft store and pick up plain wooden ornaments or small wooden shapes (you can add your own hangers). Paint them or leave them plain; they look great either way. Miniature stuffed animals, wooden spoons, practically any small household object can be turned into an ornament. Check out local craft fairs for ideas and decorations.

If you¡¯re feeling whimsical, how about a Cajun-themed tree? Wrap the tree in Mardi Gras beads, turn plastic crawfish into ornaments, and hang Spanish moss from the branches. Or string red and green jalapeno peppers, cover the tree in miniature cowboy boots, top with a real cowboy hat, and consider yourself a Texan (no, it¡¯s not technically Southern, but it is fun, not to mention that Texas-shaped ornaments and small objects are easy to find!).

Your Christmas tree decorations are limited only by your imagination. You can keep your themed tree simple by picking just one or two elements. Some people prefer a tree completely covered in decorations, and this can look lovely as well. However, if you¡¯re going to use lots of decorations, make sure they work together. Pick a color scheme with one or two main colors, or select one or two main types of decorations that will be highlighted. Don¡¯t be afraid to experiment. And if you realize that you have just too much stuff on your tree, take some off---you can always use the extras to carry the tree¡¯s theme into the rest of the house.
