During Christmas time, a house cannot be considered Christmas-cozy if the stockings are missing from their designated space over the fireplace. Even families who do not have fireplaces will be creative and hang their stockings from other overhangs in the house like counter tops and bookshelves. On Christmas morning, children and adults alike will scramble out of bed and run to their hung stockings searching for the gifts that are stuffed inside. If this is a tradition you enjoy sharing with your own family, here are a few ideas for some possible stocking stuffers.

Traditionally, stocking stuffers were meant to house those little ¡°extra¡± gifts for the family members like fruit and nuts and candies. The ¡°big¡± gifts were always placed underneath the tree. Why not toss tradition this year and do the opposite? For example, if you are giving a spouse or significant other jewelry, why not place it in the stocking. If your teenager will be graced with a new car over the holidays, place the car keys in the stocking. If your child is getting a bike or some other big toy, place a wrapped note in the stocking leading the child on a scavenger hunt around the house to find his final large gift.

* For a writer or voracious reader in your family, stuff the stocking with a pack of gel pens, a small journal or diary, some personalized bookmarks and a gift certificate to a local book store. Many bookstores also sell pocket-sized classics, which are a perfect fit for stocking stuffers. 

* For the chef in your family, get heat-resistant silicone spoons, vials of exotic spices, a pocket-sized cookbook, oven mitts and a cooking timer for their stocking. Some specialty grocery stores and many community colleges offer cooking classes, so if you have purchased a cooking class for the recipient, put the gift certificate or paperwork in the stocking, as well. 

* If you have somebody in your family who loves to grill, fill their stocking with small bottles of marinade, a small lighter, basting brushes and a meat thermometer.

* Got somebody in your life who loves to scrapbook? Go to a crafts store and buy packs of Christmas-inspired stickers, Christmas-colored paper and calligraphy pens you can put in their stocking. If you have room, you can also include scrapbook glue or tape and some nice scissors.

* Maybe you have an artist in the family. Get some mini canvases, a pack of artist brushes (of various sizes), a few tubes of basic colored paints and a small sketch pad to fill up their stocking. 

* If you have a college-bound child, the sky is the limit, as far as stocking stuffers go. Possible stocking stuffers include a phone card (so they can call you every once in a while), a roll of quarters (for laundry), gift cards to restaurants and fast-food eateries in their college area, small day planners, packs of pens and mechanical pencils and packs of Post-It notes. 

* For the movie lover in your family, you can fill their stocking with microwave popcorn bags, boxes of movie-style candy (like chocolate-covered almonds or chocolate-covered raisins) and gift certificates to the local theater or gift certificates to a local movie rental store.
