During the Christmas season, the stores are filled with any number of little gifts that would make perfect stocking stuffers for the youngsters.  Some families, however, prefer to stick to the more Christian theme when it＊s time for gift-giving 每 right down to the holiday stocking on the mantel.  For those who are members of the Catholic community that plan to use such a theme, there are plenty of great gifts that can be hidden in the youngster＊s Christmas sock.  Here are a few suggestions, for those who need a little assistance in the idea department.

CATHOLIC COLORING BOOK

Hardly a holiday goes by when kids aren＊t given the gift of a coloring book.  There are a number of such books that offer a Catholic theme, and are more abundant during holiday time, although they can be found throughout the year.  At Christmas time, coloring books reflecting the nativity are particularly appropriate, since they serve as an educational tool as well as a fun activity for the youngsters.  These are usually thin enough to fold quite nicely 每 or roll into the shape of a tube 每 and slide into a stocking.  If local bookstores or Catholic stores don＊t have them in stock, they can be found quite easily through an internet search.

RELIGIOUS JIGSAW PUZZLE - MINIATURE

While there are a number of jigsaw puzzles that are contained within boxes small enough to fit into a Christmas stocking, some of those are specific to Catholics.  When assembled, these result in pictures of Jesus, the Holy Family, a nativity scene or other images that are specific to Catholic belief and practice.  Generally speaking, these tend to be 100 pieces or less, but are enjoyed just as much by children as those of the larger variety.  A gift such as this can typically be found in a Catholic gift store, but can also be found through online searches.

RELIGIOUS MEDAL

We don＊t always fill Christmas stockings exclusively with toys and candy.  Sometimes, there are gifts of a more serious nature among the goodies.  This would be a great opportunity for parents to present their child with a religious medal 每 particularly if he or she feels a strong bond with a particular saint.  In addition to the more costly medals that are often found in gift stores, there are many varieties that specifically target children 每 i.e., the materials that are used to manufacture them are of a less expensive quality.  There are also a number of medals for those who have a Marian devotion, as well as those which reflect a specific devotion to Jesus, such as the Sacred Heart medal.

SPIRITUAL NIGHTLIGHT

There are many varieties of nightlights which reflect a spiritual theme - such as angels, Jesus, The Blessed Mother and a crucifix.  These will not only bring your child the comfort of knowing that he or she isn＊t alone in a dark room, but also provides something spiritual to focus on while nodding off to sleep.  Appropriate for both boys and girls, these nighttime companions are manufactured in a variety of colors.  Whether you＊re going for a shade that matches the bedroom＊s d谷cor or your child＊s favorite color, one of these can be found to fill the bill.

NOAH＊S ARK SET

These are wonderful sets that are both fun and educational.  They＊re particularly nice for children who love animals, or for those who do well with imaginative play.  Generally, the figures in the Noah＊s Ark Set are made of durable plastic and come in a variety of sizes 每 the smaller ones being the best size for stocking stuffers.  While the set typically includes the animals and the ark itself, you may find that the ark has to be purchased separately, on occasion.  If you＊re simply looking for extra animals to add to an existing set, this option is ideal.

MEMORY CARD GAME

Designed in typical card deck style, the Memory Card Game emulates its secular cousin, Concentration.  Containing matching sets of cards, the deck is placed face-down on the tabletop while the children take turns turning them over 每 two at a time 每 in order to find the matching pairs.  If a match is found, the player gets another turn.  If not, the next player takes a turn.  The game continues until all of the cards are turned over, revealing the matches.  Youngsters have enjoyed varieties of this game for generations, but the Catholic version offers the added benefit of inspiring spiritual questions and/or discussions.

CATHOLIC COMIC BOOKS

Just as with the more traditional style, there＊s a line of comic books that specifically target Catholic themes.  These may include stories of saints, bible stories that are expressed in the form of comic strips and particular biblical events that reflect the common beliefs and practices of the Catholic population.  These may be harder to find, but can be found online if they can＊t be purchased at 每 or ordered through 每 a Catholic gift store.  As with coloring books, these can be gently rolled into a tubular shape and slipped into a stocking.  This is a wonderful way to provide entertainment for the kids in a scenario that will assist them in learning more about their faith.

CATECHISM CDs

Most families today have a home computer, and many parents strive to provide their children with educational software.  CDs that offer information regarding Catholic catechism not only provide an educational environment, but give children the opportunity to learn specifics about religion while reading, playing games or taking part in an interactive learning environment 每 such as a quiz.  Since many CDs have provisions for more than one participant, siblings can join in 每 or even mom and dad.  There are many types of Catechism CDs, so you can give a different one to each child, or include more than one in a single stocking.

THE HOLY ROSARY

Though rosaries are appropriate for most children (with the exception of the very young), these carry special meaning when a child is studying for his or her First Holy Communion.  Religious education classes will typically introduce the children to the Holy Rosary in first or second grade, and often make time during their class schedule to lead the children in making rosaries.  It isn＊t necessarily recommended to include the more expensive versions of these in a young child＊s stocking 每 the plastic version is best for them.  These can be purchased for very little money and are abundantly available in Catholic gift shops.  Many parishes also have these located inside the main doors of the church 每 at no charge.

BIBLE STORY VIDEO

Children＊s videos depicting most of the stories of the bible are available, either separately or as part of a series.  These are generally designed to run for about 30 minutes or less, since most kids have limited attention spans.  Often filled with music and loveable cartoon-type characters which depict biblical figures, these films are a source of educational entertainment that your kids will go back to again and again.  Catholic gift shops nearly always have these videos for purchase, but they can also be found online and, sometimes, in larger department stores.

What you choose to put into your child＊s stocking will, of course, be determined by a number of things 每 including size and shape.  Items that are too large or bulky are better left for placing under the tree.  All of the items on this page, however, fit nicely into a Christmas stocking and will help children to focus on the true meaning of Christmas in a world that＊s gone too far in commercializing this most holy day.
