The Christmas spending season is just about upon us. Everyone enjoys exchanging gifts and decorating their homes; no one enjoys the credit card bills coming in January. There are plenty of ways to save at Christmas time and still enjoy the holiday. If you'd like to avoid a January surprise, read on.

The key to saving money on Christmas gifts is to shop early. By keeping an eye out for sales, you can purchase items at a discount that may mean more to a person than a last minute gift purchased in haste. Take advantage of clearance sales, sidewalk sales and other major discounts. Shop at the end of a season when the stores are making way for the incoming season's items. Make a list early in the year and keep an eye out for sales on these items throughout the year.

If it's not possible to shop year round, there are still ways to save money; it's all in your list. When making up your list, think of each person and write down what that person would like. Most people would rather have a less expensive gift that suited their personality over a pricier gift that will end up in a closet. Stick to your list and don't purchase anything if it's not already written down. 

When you're shopping, leave the credit cards and ATM cards at home and bring only as much cash as you'll need. Without the plastic, you won't be tempted to overspend. Better yet, you won't have to pay all those interest charges come the New Year. Without your ATM card available, you'll be forced to stick to your budget and avoid shopping impulsively.

You can also make gifts yourself. Everyone enjoys baked goods, why not put together a basked of home-baked breads, cookies and cakes? Not only will these items be easier on your wallet, but they'll also probably be more appreciated. If you're handy with a needle or paintbrush, you should consider painting a picture or crocheting a scarf. Chances are the recipients will be touched with the time and personal care put into their gifts. Get the children involved too. Encourage them to paint or color pictures and frames them for grandparents, aunts and uncles. Look in the library or on the Internet for other ideas on wonderful home-made Christmas gifts.

You can also give out services. Offer a house cleaning to an elderly or infirmed person on your list. Give coupons entitling the recipient to a home-baked meal or home repair.  Offer a day or two of driving to someone who might not have a car to run errands.

If you're looking to cut back, wrapping paper should be no exception. Instead of purchasing gift-wrap, why not use items found in the home. Try paper bags or newspapers. The funny papers work best for this, or find articles that would interest the person on the receiving end. A roll of white drawing paper makes great wrapping paper, especially if you'd like to get the kids involved. Have your children color, paint, sticker and glue decorative items onto their wrapping paper and encourage them to be creative as possible. Don't throw out those old sheets and pillowcases, either. Fabric makes great gift-wrap. If you are purchasing wrapping paper, be sure to comparison shop. You want to have the most paper for your money so check the quantity. Many inexpensive rolls of wrapping paper come with much less on the roll. If you're buying gift bags, you might want to consider purchasing them at the dollar store where they can cost two or three times less than those found at the card shop or party store. The good thing about gift bags is that they can be used over and over, especially if you find some that aren't for any one specific season or event.

Everyone loves to decorate for the holidays, and there are some areas here where we can save money as well. Try and make as many of your decorations as possible. Holly berries and leaves, strings of popcorn, and fresh evergreen boughs make a room festive and full of holiday spirit. A word of caution: make sure these items are placed high out of the reach of pets and small children to prevent choking hazards, as well as upset stomachs and worse.

Christmas ornaments can be made by painting pinecones and seashells and tying them to the tree with red or green ribbons. If you're not much for making your own decorations, try shopping during the week or two after Christmas when the bargain bins are filled with these items. The days after Christmas are also great for finding discounted greeting cards, stockings, lights and other items most of us couldn't do without during the holiday season. As you can see, there are many ways in which you can save money at Christmastime. Wouldn't it be nice to enjoy a little less stress during the holidays and have a little more money in the bank?
