Giving your holiday packages an attractive design helps to set them apart from the array of usual gifts that people find underneath the Christmas tree. Here are some decorating ideas that can make your gifts sparkle.

1. Use foil paper with fabric ribbons. A shiny gold or silver gift wrap design may look simple until you add a lacy holiday print ribbon. Browse your local craft or fabric store to check out the many designs of holiday ribbon ideas that you can choose from. There are thin half-inch width ribbons of red or gold, two-inch widths of lacy fabric printed with winter or Christmas scenes, and ultra-wide ribbon with colorful images that will provide a nice contrast to the plain foil.

2. For an old fashioned look, wrap your gift in plain brown mailing paper that you can purchase at mail supply stores or many department stores. Then add a simple off-white lace ribbon, tied into a basic bow, to represent the good old days when package designs were costly and few. To put a different spin on this idea, try colored lace ribbons, stringing green and red together, one thick underlying the thinner top one. Use tape or a minute amount of wallpaper putty to secure the ribbons and keep them from sliding.

4. Add a small tree ornament for flair. If the recipient of your package collects snowmen, find an adorable small snowman tree ornament and attach it to the ribbon of your package. Your thoughtfulness will be apparent in selecting an item she is interested in, and the ornament can be placed on the tree next year as a special token of your friendship. Attach cookie cutters, cut-out scenes from Christmas cards, or other memorabilia to put an attractive and unique final touch on any gift-wrapped parcel.

5. Take a gift wrapping class at your local department or bookstore. These are often offered seasonally or in pre-season, so check newspaper ads or call the store in your area that is most likely to offer a class of this type and find out if and when it will be offered. Or visit a department store's gift wrap section and ask for one or two ideas for a special gift. Chances are the staff on duty will be happy to help out, flattered that you admire their work.
