Part of the excitement in motorcycling lies in the danger and freedom of the ride, feeling the nearness of the road under your feet and the rush of air as you rumble down the street on a machine meant just for you and maybe your favorite riding buddy. 

     The conscientious motorcyclist knows the importance of the proper gear. He or she has spent considerable time and money finding the right helmet, jacket, boots, gloves and eye protection, knowing that there¡¯s a fine line between enjoying the open road¡¯s danger and living irresponsibly. In an emergency, these pieces of kit literally mean the difference between life and death.

     One common piece of equipment many bikers forget is the safety or reflective vest. Some motorcyclists forget that the most dangerous thing on the road is usually another driver, who either can¡¯t see you on your bike or doesn¡¯t take mental note of you. A relatively inexpensive piece of kit, a reflective vest might render you visible to motorists who would have otherwise not seen you, making this small investment money well spent.

     A reflective vest is particularly important if your motorcycle is black, does not have chrome parts that reflect light, or has smaller custom parts such as directionals, headlight or taillight. Recessed blinkers, for example, might look wonderful on your machine, but they are also more difficult to see, and what motorists don¡¯t see they can¡¯t avoid. A little reflectivity will go a long way toward making your rides safer and more enjoyable.

     There are a number of important details to choosing the reflective vest that¡¯s best for you. You should be aware of how well constructed the vest is and whether it allows you to synch it to fit your body type. The vest should be an appropriate color and offer maximum reflectivity. Finally, you should use common sense and understand how motorists perceive you on the road.

     The best vests are constructed of sturdy material and can be cleaned easily. The reflective material should deflect light in all directions, not only when struck directly by oncoming headlights. All zippers and straps should be heavy-duty and easily manipulated with gloved hands, similar to zippers and fasteners found on ski equipment. 

     The vest should fit snug, but not constrict movement. If it isn¡¯t comfortable when you try it on and make suitable adjustment to its straps, chances are that it will also be comfortable when you are riding. Perform rudimentary stretching movements when trying on the vest to be sure that it will be comfortable when you are seated on your bike, and don¡¯t be afraid to ask for help from the salesperson or consult customer service if you have problems.

     Vests come in an array of colors including red, yellow, orange, pink and white, and your choice of colors is largely a matter of individual taste. You should be aware, however, that orange vests might be more familiar to motorists, since construction signs and construction worker safety vests are this color. Certain colors will also stand out when placed against your jacket, which will help others see you.

     On the road, high contrast and bright colors will stand out while dull, drab or dark colors tend to blend in with surroundings. The human eye will take note of motion, and tends to read stagnant objects as less a threat than dynamic ones. For this reason it is good to adjust yourself from time to time in your seat, especially when riding on the highway at night.

     Consider wearing brighter clothes beneath your vest to enhance visibility. Bright clothing may have little effect in the day, but they are a relatively cheap way to increase visibility, and lighter colors heat up slower than dark ones.

     Many vests offer little reflective materials around the arms, so that the vest adds nothing to visibility from side streets. Wearing an armband or helmet ¡°halo¡± along with your vest makes sense if your vest is constructed in this way, or you can simply add reflective tape to the vest around the armholes.  

     If you carry a rider with you, be sure you both wear reflective vests. The most common cause of accidents is from motorists turning in front of a bike, but in order to maximize your visibility both riders should be properly equipped. You are as good as blotted out to motorists behind you if your passenger is obscuring your vest¡¯s reflective bands. 

     You will notice the benefits of your reflective vest immediately. Automobile drivers will take notice of you earlier and give you more space on roadways and intersections, and you will find yourself feeling more at ease and assured. A reflective vest makes your ride easier, more enjoyable, and, most importantly, safer.
