High on the shopping list for new parents-to-be is the baby¡¯s car safety seat.  Not only is the car seat one of the most expensive and most important safety devices you¡¯ll need, but it may be your very first purchase: hospitals usually won¡¯t let you leave with your newborn baby unless you have a car seat already installed in your car.  But there's much more to choosing a car seat than making sure the colors match your car's upholstery. Here are some tips for choosing the best car seats for the baby¡¯s first year (and beyond!).

For normal-sized newborns, an infant-only seat is often the best choice.  This seat doubles as a baby carrier that you can also use in your home, in a stroller (if it comes as part of a travel system, or if you buy a compatible stroller-base that the carrier fits into), and even in shopping carts at the supermarket.  Used in the car, it locks securely into a base that remains buckled in the vehicle.  This makes it quick, easy and safe to put your baby in the car.

However, as easy as infant-only seats are to use, they must be properly installed in order to protect your baby from a crash.  Infant-only seats must recline at a certain angle so that the baby¡¯s head doesn¡¯t flop forward, so look for a style that has an indicator that tells you when the seat is properly or improperly angled.  When installing the base, use rolled-up towels to prop the base at the proper angle.  Re-check the base often to make sure that it has not shifted, that it is installed securely (it should not move side-to-side or front-to-back), and that the seat itself reclines properly.  

Infant-only car seats only fit babies until they reach 17-22 lbs or as long as the top of their head is enclosed by the upper rim of the seat.  If you notice that your baby is getting close to these limits, it¡¯s time to shop for the next type of seat, the convertible car seat ¨C but luckily, your baby will take a lot longer to outgrow this seat than it did the infant-only seat.

Convertible car seats can be installed rear-facing or forward-facing, and the straps can be re-threaded easily to accommodate your growing child.  Your baby should stay rear-facing until she is a year old or 20 lbs; most doctors advocate keeping the seat rear-facing until the baby is a year old, even if she reaches 20 lbs long before her birthday.  The upper weight limit on convertible car seats is generally 40 lbs; look for a seat with a higher weight limit so that your child can use it as long as possible.  And since you¡¯ll be using the car seat hundreds of times, look for a seat with straps that adjust quickly and easily.

When you shop for a car safety seat, do not buy one that is used: it may have been in an accident and its ability to protect your baby may be compromised, or it may have been recalled without your knowledge. Once you buy a seat, be sure to fill out and mail the registration form so you will be notified in case your seat is recalled for any reason.

It is wise to do a little research before you buy to find out which seats are the safest and easiest to use.  An excellent source for infant car seat information and ratings is the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).  The NHTSA¡¯s ¡°2004 Child Safety Seat Ease of Use Ratings¡± report is available on their website (www.nhtsa.gov), and rates car seats on several factors such as assembly, ease of use, clarity of instructions, and more. 

You may also wish to ask your friends or relatives who have small children which car seats they use and what the pros and cons are of those seats.  And many sites that sell baby products allow parents to rate car seats and comment on their experience with the seats they have used ¨C so you can easily find out how the car seat you want performs in ¡°real life¡± situations.  

Regardless of which seat you choose, it is absolutely essential that you read through the manual carefully.  And to be doubly sure that you have installed the seat correctly, visit your local car seat inspection center (call your hospital or visit the NHTSA website for the inspection center nearest you) to make sure that the seat is properly installed.  After all, the most expensive and well-rated infant car seat is only as safe as its installation.
