A diaper bag is an essential piece of gear for any new parent. A diaper bag makes it easy to carry everything baby needs whenever you leave the house. There are many styles of diaper bags available; learn about the features that may make your trips with baby easier.
One bag or two?
If both parents routinely take baby out, decide whether you want to pass one bag back and forth along with baby or whether you would prefer to each keep a bag stocked and ready to go. If you are going to use one bag, as most people choose to do, pick a neutral style and color. Most dads are more likely to be comfortable carting the little ones and their gear if the diaper bag is not covered with fluffy pink bunnies and flowers. If the bag is for the mom¡¯s exclusive use, she can feel free to express her style.
Backpack, shoulder strap or tote
Some diaper bags have only one way to carry them. Others are convertible and can be used as a backpack or carried as a hand tote or over the shoulder. Keep in mind that styles that keep your hands free to carry a wiggling infant are the most convenient. Also look for models that are made to strap to a stroller or hiking backpack so that you can be hands-free as much as possible. Backpacks and messenger style diaper bags are especially popular with dads. Whatever style you choose, make sure the straps are comfortable and well padded.
Insulation
Some bags include insulated pockets to help keep formula or snacks cool. These are generally of more importance to mothers who carry prepared formula or expressed breast milk than moms who breast feed exclusively. Insulated pockets are also helpful for carrying baby food or toddler snacks, and are used more by people who take longer trips.
Size
Make sure the diaper bag is big enough to carry all the gear you need for baby. While some of the smaller models are quite attractive, if your bag does not hold everything you need it is worthless. Parents who spend a lot of time away from home generally need larger bags than those who just run to the store or for walks. However, at a minimum you will need space for diapers, wipes, diaper cream or ointment, a changing pad, a toy, a pacifier and a baby blanket. For longer trips you may also need to carry a change of clothes for baby, bottles, water and formula or breast milk, hand lotion, some plastic zipper bags and a bib. Consider whether you want to be able to place your purse in the bag to consolidate the things you are carrying, but resist the temptation to just store your wallet, glasses and keys in the diaper bag if the other parent routinely takes it.
Other features
Some other features available in diaper bags include built in changing pads, outer zippered pockets for easy access to small items like keys, pacifiers and phones and waterproof coatings or liners. Look at the construction and organization to make sure the bag is sturdy and has all of the compartments you think you will need.
