When you set out to purchase your child a new desk for their bedroom, there are many things to consider: quality, durability, safety, value and cost.  The best way to start your search is by eliminating what you want to avoid first, and then deciding what features you would like.

The first consideration should be safety.  If you purchase a desk with a removable hutch on the top, it could easily collapse.  Hutches are a nice addition only if they can be bolted to the wall.  If the hutch is attached to the desk, check to make sure that the piece as a whole is not top heavy.  You don't want the desk to tip over when a small child is climbing toward a top shelf. If this is a risk you don't want to take, avoid hutches altogether.

Another safety concern is the edges of the desk - are they sharp or rounded?  Sharp edges can easily poke or stab if you are running or playing in the room.  Kids also don't always do what they are told and jumping on the bed is something that they are usually told not to do.  If they fall off the bed, the sharp edges of the desk could cause some major injuries.

The next consideration up is value.  You don't want to spend a lot of money on a child's desk that they will grow out of in a few years, but you also don't want to spend too little money and have it fall apart in six months.  Avoid the desks that you can assemble yourself if you want a good quality item.  You'll be better off in the long run spending a little more money on a product that will last five or ten years that spending less on one that will last only one or two. 

Consider a computer desk as an option, even if your child doesn't have a computer to put on it.  Eventually, your child will probably need a computer in their bedroom, so you might as well buy one now.  You can always fill up the extra spaces with toys, books and stuffed animals until the day comes when a computer is a necessity.

While value and quality are closely related, a very high quality children's desk could render itself useless in a few short years.  If your child grows out of the desk before the desk is worn out, the quality hasn't done you any good unless you plan on keeping it as a family heirloom for future generations.

Durability is next on our agenda.  What will your child be doing with the desk?  If it is merely a showplace for trophies and awards with an occasional book report, you won't be needing a desk made of oak.  If your child plans of putting a stereo and speakers on the desk and will be using it for homework all of the time, you will need a more durable desk.  Again, be sure to buy a child's desk that comes pre-assembled, preferably from a furniture or office supply store.  The durability factor comes into play here with quality and value.

Cost is a factor that is based completely on your budget.  A smart parent knows that you should avoid spending a lot of money on an item which will be abused and neglected by your child.  Know your child and their actions before deciding on an expensive piece of furniture.  

Another point worth mentioning is the type of surface that is on the desk.  Is it washable?  If your kids favorite art medium is crayon, make sure that it will be safe to clean the desk with a typical kitchen spray cleaner.  Avoid the beautiful hard woods that need extra care and attention because your child will never look at it the same way that you do.
