Most children love to climb once they start walking independently.  It is just something that they are born with; it¡¯s a part of growing and a natural curiosity.  Having an absence of fear, children will take on any challenge that presents itself, such as climbing up or down stairways. That is why it is extremely important to protect them from the hazards of the open spaces of stairways and banisters.

A simple solution from protecting your child from climbing up or down stairways is to install gates or guards to block the open spaces.  There are many different styles that can be used, each with their own purpose.  A few are listed below:  

Swinging Gates

A swinging gate is the most easiest and economical to use.  The hardware is usually quick and easy to install, and is easily accessible for adults to use.  It is permanently mounted, the swinging gate part on one side of the wall, and the locking mechanism on the other side.  When not locked in place, you can prevent the gate from swinging out over the staircase by adjusting the hardware, so that it will only swing inward.  Most are very sturdy and will surely prevent children from accessing the stairs.    

There are many different styles of swinging gates to choose from.  It is certain that you will be able to find one that will blend in with your furnishings.  There are plastic, wood, and metal gates in white, black, and wood-stained. There are even plastic-paneled gates without bars, so that toddlers are able to see clearly through.  This has the benefit of letting the child not having anything to obstruct their view, and lets them concentrate more on playing rather than what¡¯s happening on the other side of the gate.  Most swinging gates come with a convenient adjustable width-range, which will fit most openings.  If there is an extra wide opening, there are gates that are made to expand especially for those as well.  

Mesh Gates/Barriers

The Mesh gate/barriers have a steel frame and are usually adjustable to odd-sized openings, making it very sturdy and easy to install. The barriers are not permanent, so this type would be a great choice for apartments, or a place where you don¡¯t plan on staying long.  They are also great to travel with.  A problem that these types of gates can pose is that they are not easily accessible for adults.  You will either have to climb over it, which is difficult for short people or release the tension rod every time it is opened, which can be a nuisance.

Pressure-Mounted Gates

Pressure-mounted gates are very similar to the mesh gates in that they require no hardware what-so-ever.  These are also great for use in apartments or other temporary living spaces.  They are adjustable, although sometimes hard to adjust, and fit most openings and if used correctly, will not damage walls.  You can make them as tight as you want and kids will not be strong enough to release the tension, making them very sturdy.  These gates are light-weight and easy to carry with you if you plan on traveling.  However, like the mesh gates, it can be a nuisance to release the pressure every time an adult needs to open it, or climb over it.
