Nothing is more rewarding than sharing the joy of reading with your child. If you already like to read, then you have probably been reading story books to your baby since he or she was born. If you¡¯re not an avid reader, now is the time to start reading with your child.
As your child grows into the toddler years, there are many classic story books that you can read together. Most of these books should be available at your local library or bookstore or they can be ordered online. Here are some wonderful story books that should be a part of every child¡¯s toddler years:
-- ¡°Pat the Bunny¡± by Dorothy Kunhardt. Truly a classic (it was first published in 1940) this interactive book has textured pages that your child can touch as you pat a bunny, feel Daddy¡¯s whiskers and look in the mirror. Even the youngest babies love this book!
-- ¡°The Snowy Day¡± by Ezra Jack Keats. Join young Peter as he has a great day playing in the snow¡ªsledding, making snowballs, snow angels and even taking some snow home with him!
-- ¡°Chicka Chicka Boom Boom¡± by Bill Martin, Jr. and John Archambault. Teach your child the alphabet in a fun way with this book. The rhymes will be stuck in your head after you read it a few times!
-- ¡°I Love You as Much¡± by Laura Krauss Melmed. This beautifully illustrated book is about animals and their babies, and the love that all mothers share with their children.
-- ¡°Goodnight Moon¡± by Margaret Wise Brown. This is a great bedtime book, as you and your child join a rabbit as he says goodnight to everything in his room-- and to the moon.
Best of the best: Some classic children¡¯s authors you should be sure to check out:
-- Richard Scarry. Many of us grew up reading Richard Scarry books, so how wonderful it is to share these great books with your child today! Mr. Scarry¡¯s distinctive illustrations will take you down memory lane. Some favorites include ¡°Richard Scarry¡¯s Best Word Book Ever¡±, ¡°Cars and Trucks and Things That Go¡± and ¡°Richard Scarry¡¯s What People Do All Day¡±.
-- Don Freeman. Don Freeman¡¯s writing and illustrations are instantly recognizable. Your toddler will especially love Freeman¡¯s ¡°Corduroy¡± book series. Available in board book form, these stories are about the every day adventures of a cuddly teddy bear named Corduroy. ¡°Corduroy¡¯s Party¡±, ¡°Corduroy¡¯s Busy Street¡± and ¡°Corduroy Goes to the Doctor¡± are just a few of the titles that your child will enjoy.
-- Nancy Tafuri. Nancy Tafuri¡¯s gorgeously illustrated books are always a hit with young children. Tafuri takes the simplest of subjects, such as a goose aimlessly looking for a nest in which to lay her eggs, and turns it into a wonderful story. Some great titles by Tafuri include ¡°Silly Little Goose¡±, ¡°Counting to Christmas¡± and ¡°Have You Seen My Duckling?¡±
-- Eric Carle. Eric Carle¡¯s toddler-friendly books have been in print for years and are known for their bold, colorful illustrations. Try reading ¡°The Very Hungry Caterpillar¡±, ¡°Mister Seahorse¡± and ¡°Dream Snow¡±.
-- Dr. Seuss. The one and only Dr. Seuss has been a household name for decades. With irresistible rhymes and quirky characters, these books have withheld the test of time. Your child will love the infamous ¡°Cat in The Hat¡± as well as ¡°Hop on Pop¡± and ¡°One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish¡±.
The early years are the time to instill a love of reading within your child. Read to your child every night before bedtime. Read during the day and add to the fun by doing a book-related craft or activity after your story. For example, after reading ¡°The Snowy Day¡± or any other book about winter, make paper snowflakes with your child or go outside and play in the real snow. You¡¯ll have a great time and your child will look forward to your daily story time together!
