Every child grows and develops at his or her own rate; no child will ever be the same in this area of life. Pediatricians are trained to understand that each child is different and it is their job to determine whether a child is on the right developmental track. A pediatrician would be the first person to go to for resources on child development. A pediatrician is able to give you referrals to many different classes, specialists and agencies within the community that will be of service to you concerning your childĄ¯s development. Most pediatricians are equipped with information about the different stages of childhood development and will explain this information to you at each visit.

One of the places that a pediatrician might refer you to is your local Women, Infant and Children Centers or WIC. The WIC offices are usually located at your local Health or Community Center and are designed to help you understand the nutritional requirements of your child. They can provide you with many different resources that would be relevant to your childĄ¯s development through classes and handouts; they can answer any questions that you might have about your childĄ¯s development. WIC will also be able to help you find other local resources where you can get child development information.

Locate the local Family Support Center or Community Resource Center and ask about classes that they might offer to help you and your child. Many of these centers are run by the state and provide a wealth of information to new and young parents through parenting classes and counselors. When attending these classes you will be given books and pamphlets all about child development and you will be able to ask questions and get other resources as well. Some states even have Mommy and Me classes and support groups that provide in home counseling sessions. If there is a local branch of the United Way Foundation, they can provide you with many different resources and help as well.

The library is another place to look for child development resources. You will be able to find books about raising children, parenting, child development, developmental delays and books on how to help your child reach their highest potential. Many libraries offer daytime activities designed to stimulate a childĄ¯s mind and body; these activities usually include a story time and a rhythm and music time. Many libraries have a large selection of self-help books that will show you different activities that you can do with your child to encourage proper development while still allowing them to move at their own pace. 

The Internet will also provide you with a wide variety of resources.  Hundreds of credible web sites are available that can help you get the information you need. By entering the words child development resources into any search engine you will see lists of web sites designed to provide parents with the help and resources that they need. Many well-known foundations and organizations that were designed to provide child development resources to parents are on the internet and can be easily contacted through their web site. 

Another great place for parents to seek out child development resources is their local Head Start. Head Start is a government-funded program designed to help parents in getting their children ready for school. They work hard to understand the individual needs of each child that is in their program and they work closely with the parents to make sure they have the resources they need. Many Head Start programs are designed to work with children from birth through age five. They provide screenings for the children and resources for the parents to make sure that the children are on the right developmental track. A Head Start program can be found by doing a search on the internet, asking the childĄ¯s pediatrician or through the local WIC office. There are plenty of resources available for parents all you have to do is ask.
