Bringing a newborn baby into your life is definitely a blessed occasion, and you are proud of your little bundle of joy.  As parents, you want to continually protect your baby in all ways.  One important way to help protect your newborn baby is to buy diapers that can protect their umbilical cord or to diaper them in a way that will protect their umbilical cord.

It is important to keep your newborn baby¡¯s umbilical cord clean and aired out at all times.  In order to do this, you want to make sure that you do not cover their umbilical cord with the diaper.  Whether you choose to use disposable diapers or washable diapers, there are ways that you can help protect your little one.  

Many disposable diapers that are out on the market today offer different sized diapers for babies as they grow.  Make sure to purchase the newborn diapers.  Depending on the size of the newborn, the diapers may still be big on them.  Some makers of diapers actually sell newborn diapers that have a little cut out on the front of the diaper for the umbilical cord.  These diapers are good because they keep the protection of your newborn in mind.  These cutouts allow you the protection of the diaper in all other areas, and also the protection of the umbilical cord.  The goal is to keep the diaper from actually touching the umbilical cord at all.  That is why many parents will spend the money to get the diapers with the cutouts made just for their newborn.

The cutout idea is a great idea but many diapers do not have it, and there is still a chance that the diaper will be too big for the newborn.  If you notice that the diapers you are using are still covering the umbilical cord, you can correct this by using a simple tip.  When you put the diaper on your baby, fold the front of the diaper down far enough to allow the umbilical cord enough room to breath.  You must also allow enough room to ensure that the movement of the newborn will not move the diaper up to the umbilical cord.  Make sure to fold the diaper down far enough to leave room for the movement.  This is a very simple way to protect your baby¡¯s umbilical cord while diapering.

If you use washable diapers, it is also important to leave breathing room for the umbilical cord.  Just follow the same tip as the disposable diapers.  Just fold the diaper down far enough in the front to allow room for the umbilical cord.  If the diaper touches the umbilical cord, it can get infected, or even be damaged and cause the baby pain.  Since you want to protect your little one, make sure to allow plenty of room for a breathable area around the umbilical cord by using the tips here.

Once you get the hang of diapering your newborn baby in order to protect their umbilical cord, you will feel even more proud of yourself for being a great parent.  The umbilical cord will naturally fall off, but until then it is important to keep a clean breathable area around the baby¡¯s umbilical cord.
