Members of a religious congregation or worship center often help to care for their church in a number of ways. But sometimes it's twenty percent of the members who end up doing eighty percent of the work. 

If you belong to a church or would like to join one, and want to pitch in to help make your worship center successful, here are some ways to show your support:

1. Pitch in with spring cleaning. Most churches have a janitorial service that provides year-round general maintenance services. But few can afford to pay for an annual or semi-annual in-depth cleaning that gets into the attic, basement, rafters, and corners. No one wants their church to appear neglected or uncared for, so help remove those cobwebs and make the fixture sparkle and shine. If your church currently does not provide this service opportunity, talk to the pastor about starting one.

2. Support fund-raising activities. If the church puts on a spaghetti dinner in hopes of buying a new pulpit from the proceeds, stop in and buy a plate or two. When the members host a garage sale with profits earmarked for church carpet, donate your unused furniture or outgrown clothing. In whatever ways the church attempts to raise money for a realistic need or long-term goal, let others in your neighborhood and community know about the event and plan to take part in as many as you can.

3. Encourage visitors and members. Arrive early and welcome new faces with a smile and a handshake. Answer questions and direct guests to classrooms or the main sanctuary. Donate a couple dozen cookies for a visitors' reception. When someone falls ill, stop by with a fresh-baked pie or a complete meal or simply send a card with good wishes and mention you will pray for that person. Letting others know you care helps to support the body of members.

4. Take a role. Join mission or outreach committees, write and produce a skit, teach Sunday school, help supervise youth activities, or suggest a new project based on your observation of current needs. Don't wait for others to take note of and respond to a problem. Be there first with ideas to make things better. 

5. If all else fails, give a donation. Many churches adopt a tithing policy based on biblical teachings about money and longstanding tradition. A tithe is ten percent of one's income, either gross or net. Some members give ten percent to regular church operations, and when they can afford it, provide a little more for additional needs, such as building or remodeling program, new missionary, etc. Whether you give of your time and talents or not, don't forget to pay the preacher. Like everyone else, he has to eat and pay rent, too. 

Research shows that people who attend church on a regular basis have healthier lifestyles and live longer than those who don't have a religious affiliation. Many attribute miraculous healings, like the 15-year-old girl who survived rabies without treatment, to the power of shared prayer, which also has been documented in medical studies. Get involved with a church of your choice and take care of it in the same way you hope it will care for you.
