One of the most sacred traditions of the Christian church is a child¡¯s christening, or baptism. During this ceremony an infant is anointed with water, either by sprinkling or immersion, and is welcomed into the family of God. Other Christian churches, believing that baptism should be a personal decision made when a person is older, dedicate their little ones to God in what is called a dedication service. While churches may differ in the style and content of the ceremony, it is always a joyous occasion where family and friends come together to celebrate the child.
Of all the preparation that goes into this ceremony, choosing the christening gown or outfit seems to be one of the most important. Traditionally, it was the godparent¡¯s responsibility to supply the gown, but that is no longer the case. Family members may vie to buy something for the child to wear while others may offer christening gowns that are family heirlooms. Often the parents choose to buy the outfit themselves.
Regardless of who is buying the christening gown, these things should be kept in mind:
Gown vs. Outfit. A Christening gown looks like a very long dress that reaches past the feet, but it can be worn by infant girls or boys. Traditionally all children who were christened or baptized wore gowns, but in modern times other options have become available. Dresses that fall above the ankle are available for girls and little outfits with shorts, pants, vests and even jackets are available for boys. It is still acceptable for little boys to wear the traditional christening gown, but for those who prefer to have their little guy look like a little guy the options are increasing. The first decision to make when considering your child¡¯s christening attire is whether you would like a traditional gown or a more modern dress or outfit.
Heirloom quality. If you decide that you would like your child to wear a gown, and there is no heirloom gown available from family or friends, you may decide you would like to purchase a gown that can become an heirloom. Look for gowns made of high quality fabric. Gowns that are considered heirloom quality will cost more than others, but they should, with proper care (which is discussed at the end of this article), last for generations.
Cost. If you are not buying something of heirloom quality then there is no need to spend a fortune. Beautiful christening clothing can be purchased at department stores for as little as $30. Do not feel as if you need to go beyond your budget for an outfit your child is going to wear for only a short time.
Style. If your church is very traditional, if the members still dress in suits and dresses every Sunday morning, then a traditional formal christening gown or outfit is probably appropriate. But if your church is casual, if it is common for the members to come to church in jeans, then a special christening outfit might not even be necessary. Many people are opting nowadays to buy a beautiful dress or a little outfit for their child that is not white that can be worn other times besides the baptism. The style of the church and your family¡¯s personal style should be taken into consideration when purchasing the clothing for your child¡¯s christening.
The Church¡¯s requirements. Speak with someone from the church and ask if the church requires that the child wear a traditional white gown or if there are any other requirements to keep in mind. Most churches do not have such requirements, but it is a good idea to ask.
Accessories. There are many accessories that can be purchased along with the outfit. Bibs (very important if you hope to preserve the gown or outfit), shoes, socks, jewelry for little girls, special blankets that can be monogrammed, bonnets, and white covered Bibles are all things that can be bought along with the outfit.
Once the gown or outfit has been purchased and worn at the ceremony special consideration should be taken to preserve it whether you intend for it to be an heirloom or not. Have it professionally persevered by a place that preserves wedding gowns or follow these steps in order to preserve the outfit:
1. Wash the outfit by hand being careful to rinse well or have the garment dry cleaned. Pay special attention to any stains, particularly formula stains. Do not use harsh detergents, bleach or fabric softeners if washing yourself.
2. Stuff the outfit with acid free tissue paper to help keep it from getting permanent creases if you will be hanging it or place the acid free tissue paper folded in between the garment if you are going to be folding it and putting it in a box.
3. Store the clothing in a chemical free cotton bag on a chemical free cotton wrapped hanger or in an acid free keepsake box. Place the bag or box in a dark, dry closet or cedar chest. Never place the outfit in a vinyl or plastic bag because the chemicals in the bag will discolor and deteriorate the fabric over time. |
