There is no shortage of aromatherapy products to be found on the market today. Everything from candles, bath salts, body washes and linen sprays can be found with the label that says ¡°aromatherapy¡± on it. Increasingly popular are kits or supplies to make your own aromatherapy products at home. But consumers should beware! Some of these products are made with fragrance oils instead of therapeutic essential oils. There is a huge difference between the two, and many reasons why you should steer clear of the fragrance oil products and reach for those made of essential oils. Using the cheaper fragrance oils may negate the effects of the aromatherapy products. The reasons why are listed below.
Fragrance oils are often chemical in nature. The chemicals are mixed to resemble popular scents and then mixed with either treated water or alcohol. Since these chemicals are man-made, they can irritate skin and cause rashes or allergic reactions in some people. Imagine these are used in your ¡°aromatherapy¡± lotion, and you spread it all over your body. Also, alcohol is very drying to the skin, whether you are allergic to it or not.
Essential oils are quite the opposite of the fragrance oils. They come from the essential parts of plants, thus the name. Everything from petals, seeds, leaves and stems are used. The oils are extracted through either a steam or cold press or water distillation. The essential oils separate from the water, and they are gleaned and strained, and then sold. Depending on which essential oil you are talking about, they may have many different medicinal or therapeutic affects.
If aromatherapy was only about scent (as the name nearly implies), then fragrance oils that could imitate the scent of essential oils would work just fine in aromatherapy products. But this is not the case. For aromatherapy to work properly, it must natural, and come from a pure source, then diluted (contact with pure essential oils or fragrance oils can cause allergic reactions or even be toxic! Read labels carefully). This means that both fragrance and essential oils must be mixed with a ¡°carrier oil¡±. For fragrance oils, this means synthetic oils, for essentials, this can mean olive, sweet almond, sunflower, safflower, grapeseed, or a variety of other natural oils.
Mixing a synthetic oil with fragrance oil in it will not be bad for you body (except for the drying affects of any alcohol), and it is very inexpensive. But again, you will not get the therapeutic affects of carrier oil mixed with an essential oil. So it is not just a matter of price, but of quality, as well. But the extra price is well worth it. Imagine that it takes roughly a whole rose¡¯s worth of petals to make a single drop of rose essential oil! So now you see where the extra cost comes from. Also, imagine you buy a lavender lotion, expecting calming effects, but don¡¯t get any. This may be because it is lavender-scented, and had no natural lavender oils in it at all. If the product doesn¡¯t work, this may make you angry, which is the exact opposite of the intended effect!
So as you can see, there are advantages to both fragrance and essential oils. Price is the biggest plus for the fragrance oils, whereas purity and health benefits are in favor of essential oils. If you want a TRUE aromatherapy product, make sure it is made with essential oils and not a fragrance one. If you don¡¯t, you may be overpaying for something that has no aromatherapy properties at all. Natural products are always better to use rather than synthetic, if available. And there is a vast variety of natural aromatherapy products to be found, just make sure to check the labels!
