Shoulder baby holders are designed to free up the mother¡¯s or father¡¯s arms while holding the baby close and safe, and also are a wonderful way to take the baby for a walk without maneuvering a stroller. There are several different kinds of baby holders: front-loading or back-loading; carriers with lots of straps or cloth slings made of a single piece of material; and even carriers designed specifically for hiking. Deciding which type of baby carrier or baby sling is right for you and your baby depends largely on your lifestyle and what you¡¯ll be doing while carrying the baby.
Front-loading, soft baby carriers, such as the popular Snugli and BabyBj?rn brand soft carriers, can be used from the time the baby weighs 7-8 lbs. until the baby reaches 26 lbs. The baby initially faces the mother or father¡¯s chest, with the baby¡¯s back and head supported by a pad. When the baby is old enough to face forward (away from the person wearing the carrier) and can hold his or her head steady, the supporting pad folds down and supports the baby¡¯s chest while allowing the little one to see the world.
Back-loading frame carriers are usually sporty, sturdy and designed for the parent who wants to take their baby along on a hike. These carriers are equipped with a kickstand so that the baby can be easily loaded into the carrier before the parent puts the carrier on his or her back. Also, frame carriers for use in hiking usually have a canopy to shade the baby from the sun. Frame carriers are for use with larger babies, from about 6 months of age up to 40 lbs., and are definitely not for use around the house.
Cloth baby slings come in two basic types: adjustable or non-adjustable. Adjustable slings have rings that allow them to be made larger or smaller for use by different people, while the non-adjustable slings come in different sizes and cannot be adjusted for the wearer¡¯s size.
One advantage of using a sling as opposed to a carrier is that slings are easier to learn to use and also fold up more compactly for travel. They can also be used from birth until toddlerhood, from birth up to 40 lbs., as the baby grows. Also, cloth slings come in a wide variety of colors and patterns, allowing the parent to express their individuality. Some of the most popular cloth slings are the New Native carrier, the Nojo baby sling, the Over the Shoulder Baby Holder, and the Maya Wrap.
Also, cloth baby slings may be either padded or non-padded. While the padded slings may offer more support for the baby, they can be hot and do not fold up as compactly as non-padded slings. However, you may have the best of both worlds by ordering a cushion for use inside the non-padded sling, which you can remove later on when the baby is bigger and doesn¡¯t need it anymore.
With many front-loading baby carriers and cloth slings, it is possible to discreetly breastfeed the baby without removing the baby from the holder. When shopping for a baby holder, nursing mothers may wish to make sure the carrier or sling they choose allows the baby to be easily positioned for nursing.
Whether you choose a soft or frame baby carrier or a baby sling, keep in mind that it is best to begin acclimating the baby to the baby holder as soon as possible after birth, when he or she is still accustomed to being curled up and enjoys being swaddled. A baby who is already a few months old will resent being confined in a sling or carrier, but a young baby ¨C after a period of a few days at the most ¨C will usually find the holder soothing (and the parent will find it an excellent way to calm a colicky or fussy baby). |
