For this party, you'll be turning your back (or front) yard into a beach. How much room you need will primarily depend on how many guests you intend to invite.
INVITATIONS:
Get some inexpensive beach balls at a dollar or dime store. Inflate them. Use a permanent marker and write the party information on the beach ball, saying something like, "come have a ball at my back yard beach party!" Make sure to include that it will be an outdoor party, and guests should wear a bathing suit, sun screen and bring a towel. When the ink is dry, deflate the beach ball and stash it in a bag or envelope. Indicate on the bag or envelope the ball should be blown up for a message to appear.
DECORATIONS:
At this party, the decorations can also be the main activities. If you have a pool, all the better. If not, invest in two or three of those inexpensive plastic wading pools (they can be purchased at most mega- marts in the summer time for around $5) and line them up in the sun. Fill them with water and toys so the kids can splash around.
If you don't already have a sand box, get a few large, shallow plastic storage containers and fill them with sand and sand toys.
Cut large boat-shapes out of cardboard and paint them bright colors. Tape a long, thin dowel to the back of them. Take a piece of white oat tag paper and cut two holes in it-- one toward the top, and one toward the bottom. Place it over the dowel to make it look like a sail boat, or cut the oat tag into triangles and tape it to the dowels. Line the back fence or side of the house with the sail boats for decoration.
Hang beach balls across clothes lines, and, if you can get some old cargo or fishing net, drape it across the fence or hang it from a line. Put fish and star fish cut outs made of cardboard and painted brightly on it.
ACTIVITIES:
Have a sand castle contest. Let the children work in groups to create a sand castle out of the sand boxes you've set out for them.
Play pass the beach ball. This game is like hot potato, but played with a beach ball. Let the children stand in a circle and pass the ball around. An adult should be by the radio and playing some music, preferably a tune by the Beach Boys. When the music goes off, the person holding the beach ball is out. Keep going until you have a winner.
Make sand art. Get some plastic bottles (they can be purchased at craft stores in shapes such as shells and dolphins), and assorted colored sand. Put out plastic spoons and funnels for the kids to layer the sand in the bottles, then seal the cork with a dab of craft glue before placing it in firmly. The children can make their own keepsakes for the party.
Play "Wipe Out." Get a wooden plank from the lumber store and paint it like a surfboard. Put a rolling pin or large dowel on the ground, and put the center of the board on top of it, so it pivots slightly like a teeter totter. You don't want it to be high, but slightly elevated and movable so it dips back and forth when balancing on it. One guest gets up on the surf board or plank and has to try to balance it so neither end is touching the ground. Play music, such as the hit surfer classic, "Wipe Out." All the other guests either throw water balloons at him, or spray him with hoses and super soaker water guns, trying to make him loose balance and fall off. Time each guests-- whoever stays on the longest, wins! If you want to make sure your guests don't fall and hurt themselves, you might want to do this on the grass, or throw a few large cushions behind them that have been sealed in plastic garbage bags.
REFRESHMENTS
Set out gold fish crackers, gummy sharks and gummy worms in plastic beach pails for your guests.
Take the opportunity to have a summer barbecue! Burgers, hot dogs, grilled corn on the cob and a summer salad is always a hit.
Snow cones are quite refreshing during outdoor summer fun.
Make a cake in the shape of a fish, frost with white frosting, and use colored sugar to make the fish a rainbow fish. If you can't find a fish shaped cake pan, just make a sheet cake and use a knife to cut out a general fish shape (oval body and triangular tail).
GOODY BAGS:
Fill a goody bag with plastic sun glasses, colorful zinc sticks for face and lip protection, a small frisbees, plastic baggies filled with gummy fish, and a keepsake sea shell with the party information written on it. |
