Wedding programs are an important part of the wedding day because they serve as an invaluable guide for the guests.  When a program is handy, they¡¯ll always know what¡¯s going on as it takes place.  For example, if the ceremony includes religious rituals or a special selection of music, guests can keep up easily by referring to a program.  Besides the practical use of wedding programs, they also serve as sentimental keepsakes that guests can pack up with their favors and take home.  With all the money spent on paper and printing during a wedding, from save-the-dates to invitations to seating cards, it might seem like a good idea to skip the programs.  Instead of depriving guests of the all-important program, consider making the program yourself.  

When couples plan a wedding on an extremely tight budget, it will probably work out best to keep the programs down to a single page.  For a little more per program, turn that piece of paper into a small booklet and chock it full of extra information.  

Pick the paper:

Visit office supply stores, specialty stationary stores and high quality paper suppliers to find the perfect paper.  Paper can be found in all styles, embossed, patterned, and textured.  Paper can contain natural fibers such as grass, leaves and flowers.  It can be dyed to any color of the rainbow, including a shade that perfectly complements your wedding theme.  Paper can even be made into interesting shapes, circular, square, or hexagonal, so don¡¯t settle on plain white paper.  The type of paper you want will depend on the style of the program.  If the program will be a single sheet of paper, print it on thick, sturdy paper that can stand up as it is being held.  Since the guests won¡¯t be able to judge the program by its cover (it won¡¯t have one) make sure the single sheet of paper is styled to suit the wedding theme by shape or color.  For a program with a cover and an insert, choose a sturdy paper for the cover, one with eye catching shape pattern or color.  The inside of such a program can be printed on simple, solid white or ivory paper.  For booklets, find a weather-proof cover.  Inside, include a table of contents page at the front, printed on nice paper.  The rest of the inside can be printed on all plain paper, or a mixture of plain and styled paper.  

Details:

Since these programs will be printed on a home printer it¡¯s best not to include large graphics, such as a 5x7 bride and groom photo.  This doesn¡¯t mean they have to look dull.  Graphics are still important, even if they aren¡¯t huge.  One elegant yet printer friendly graphic, ideal for programs, is a monogram.  Even if there is no name change, monograms of both sets of initials make a great detail.  Create a monogram from colored ink and unusual fonts.  Initials can be printed on the cover, or on the inside of every page.  For people with extensive clip art selections, find a wedding appropriate picture, such as wedding cake and bells or perhaps a symbolic religious or ethnic graphic.  The fonts you choose will also make a big difference.  Don¡¯t use type that appears to have been scrawled by a pre-schooler unless it fits the theme.  If your computer doesn¡¯t come equipped with appropriate fonts, try downloading free ones from myfonts.com of fontshop.com, or visit a local office supply store to purchase more options.

Wording:

Be sure to include the most important information first.  Include your names, the wedding date, time and place, parents (grandparents are optional), the officiant and the wedding party members.  Leave the quotes, poems, and thanks either to the bottom of a one-page program or for later pages in a multipage program.
